Do you weave?
When approching intercections with opposing traffic, left turners, etc. do you weave?
I generally throw in a couple of left/right weaves when near the intersection. The cagers seem to notice that I'm there and there is some research that supports this idea: http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety...me2/rsrr85.pdf Discuss. I tend not to weave near intersections or in any low speed situation. There is often an assortment of grease/oil/gravel at those spots that can put you down if your bike isn't upright as you slow. Also, I have meandered my way up to a light before only to get a nasty look from cagers; maybe they thought I was " stuntin' "

I'll weave sometimes if it makes me a bit more visible but I do worry that in some circumstances it may send a confusing messsage to other drivers as to my intentions.

you know i was on the other end of this (in my car, stopped at a stop sign, waiting to turn) and witnessed a fellow biker do this. I have to admit, i was more aware of the biker with him doing so.
I will consider doing this but as tapdiggy mentioned, it can become rather dangerous in certain intersections.

I do this whenever I have even just the slightest doubt about the other person seeing me.
Which is.... pretty much all the time. So if I can't enter an intersection with a vehicle next to me I almost always weave a little bit in my lane. I even do it in regular moving traffic, helps people notice your presence. Saw a biker do it once while I was in my car driving, I noticed him before hand but the moment he did that my eyes went right to my rear view mirror where I could see him. It definitely grabs peoples attention no matter where you are. |

The link in the first posting got truncated. Here's the full URL: http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety...me2/rsrr85.pdf
I haven't read through the 48 page report yet. It looks interesting. Right now I'll have to say that I don't "weave". (I'll have to see what they define as "weaving" in the report.) I do have some things that I do to make sure I'm visible, not in blind spots, etcetera.

I do weave in traffic if I'm not convinced the driver in front of me is aware of my presence. The headlight in the mirror gets their attention pretty quickly.
I'd be reluctant to weave approaching an intersection for reasons stated above i.e. surface condition, and I'm usually busy scanning the intersection for potential trouble.

Never thougth about it. I typically try to see they eyes of anyone near me. Kind of like a hockey goalie with multiple pucks/shooters. Not perfect in all intersections though due to number of cars.

Absolutely. If I am approaching an intersection and someone is waiting to make a left turn, I will often do a "left-right" wiggle so that the driver sees some lateral movement. I find it to be an extremely effective technique.

Thinking about it, I know I will change my lane position to be as visible as possible coming to an intersection, but I have never (purposefully) weaved back and forth. Typically I am so focused on trying to see who might run me over I don't think about much else....

Something to keep in mind is the UK left-hand traffic. All of the left and right references should be flipped when thinking about how it applies to us (US). I'm curious if their suggestion is the same for multiple lane roads, where there's more than one lane in each direction. Could a "weave" be mistaken for an "attempted lane change" by other drivers?

What would be bad about that? The whole point of making a slight weave (notice slight) is to get noticed. In your example, the rider gets noticed, and that's the key thing.

Don't weave due to the possibility of junk on the road. I do flip on my modulator and set up for the best lane position. Seems to work most often but there is always an idiot that ignores it anyway and for that u have to be prepared to do the "avoidance weave"....

I weave alot, sometimes to warm up the tires, sometimes to make myself more visible, and sometimes just for fun.

Yeah, I kinda weave constantly on good roads where I can't just ignore the speed limit. I'm easily bored though.
