Gear protection
How do you protect your new gear? Do you put any type of waterproofing, or stain guard on the shell?

I'll second that. I don't do any active applications of anything. I just try to store it all well. Especially with my helmet; I don't hang it on things or let it sit on the shell. I get home, it goes in the bag and in my closet or somewhere where it won't be knocked down. Clean it if ever I get bugs on it as soon as I get home.

I'd be hesitant to put any chemicals on any of my gear. Most manufactures recommend you just use water to clean their helmets (the outside of them, anyway). And chemistry? that s**t is crazy; who knows how a chemical could react to textiles. It could make it less abrasion resistant.

I use black boot polish on my leather jacket, it just conditions the leather and keeps it supple, leather being a fibre that needs to remain somewhat "moisturised" else it dries and cracks and breaks when flexed, keep it conditioned and it'll remain supple and good.
My helmet I don't bother with, I just clean my visor with a dilute dish soap spray. Boots, I use boot polish. Gloves need washing weekly being waterproof and well lined that pen and ink after a while. |

Isn't the gear supposed to protect you?...........or is the other way around?
Head to toe? Leather, textile or mesh?

I use mink oil on leather, and I wax my entire helmet with carnuba wax after cleaning it after each ride. Makes the bugs come off much easier. I keep my suits in garment bags, but make sure you let the insides dry out before putting them in the bag.

Any product that contains lanolin is excellent for gloves.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanolin "Baseball players often use it to soften and break in their baseball gloves (shaving cream with lanolin is popularly used for this)."

I use mink oil to keep other leather products supple. Anyone tried it on their leathers?
