Looking for a place to go fast near Sacramento... without going to jail.
I know it's probably a long shot, but is there a place I can test the speed limits of my bike somewhere around the Sacramento area? I'm not in a place right now where I can do a track-day, so that's out. An abandoned airstrip would be perfect, but the only inactive strip I knew about around here was developed into an neighborhood a couple/few decades ago, and all the small airports are active..... I'm not going to risk the hell that would rain down on me by attempting to do a run on an active runway.
It maybe wishful thinking, but I'm looking for something not overly dangerous, or illegal.

Track. Period.
If you're lucky, you can find a straight stretch of I-5 without traffic around and open 'er up, but I wouldn't recommend it. (I admit I've done it on my road bike in the past, but it was in a really abandoned backroad that I could see for miles.) Both the bikes you have listed won't do much over 100 mph, and that's plenty. Why do you want to just go fast? Anyone can go fast in a straight line. |

Take a road trip to roads with high speed limits, like Utah (80mph) or Texas (85mph).

Much cheaper than a speeding ticket and fees to get your bike out of impound.

take it to the track
Quote:
All this b.s. about how difficult it is to prep your bike is just b.s. Very simple and cheap. Buy water wetter and blue masking tape, you're done. In fact, now track providers here are simply *recommending* you change your coolant out, not requiring it. Both zoom-zoom and precision trackdays offer a great experience at a great price. You want fast straights, go to thunderhill--it's really a collection of straights connected by corners (not really to my liking, but...). I'm doing thunderhill west side with precision trackdays on Nov 1st. Now, just hoping it won't rain... The other thing you get with a trackday is supervision and an ambulance waiting. Crash alone on some desolate road, good luck. Something to think about... Now that I've done a few trackdays I understand they can be intimidating, but it's really just a bunch of people getting together to have fun, no one cares about your fancy or not-so-fancy bike, and organizers do their best to make the first-timer experience positive. Just do it! |

I've done the full 5 mile track twice and it's a good mix of slow and fast sections. I posted a lap in the Thunderhill West thread. Last futzed with by algs26; October 27th, 2014 at 01:35 AM. Reason: added quoting |

Ride to placerville. As soon as you hit the first stop light take a left up towards Georgetown. Stay to the right at the fork and take a right when you get into town. That road you can test the speed of the ninjette all day.
Seriously some of the best riding ever out in the Sierra foot hills. A little too high speed for my tastes. |

I believe there is a pretty good straight away just past Foresthill but I haven't been up there in years, just do a once over and make sure the roads are safe first!

If I am reading your directions right, that's Wentworth Springs Rd.
OP, if you go up there, be warned that most of it is still within the King Fire closure area. - having trouble getting into the actual USFS site this morning... here's the latest on the InciWeb site: http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/photos/CAENF...0-133047-0.pdf
