Angry Carburetor problems...

Got this motorcycle from a family member, it has been sitting for 10 years. Just cleaned the carbs (bowls, jets etc...) put it back in and got a new battery. Cranks and turns over but no start. So I sprayed a little starter fluid into the airbox and it revs up 3-5k rpm and dies, throttle doesn't help to keep it running. I know its looking like a carb rebuild, but is there any tricks I can try or things to look at before then?

Thank you!!

Hi, greetings & salutations!!!

There's A LOT of specialised equipment and decades of experience needed to properly do restoration job on these carbs. Especially one that's been sitting that long. Many expert mechanics have had to pull carbs 4-5 times for ever deeper cleaning before bike would run right. One guy had to pull cabs 10 TIMES!

I suggest sending carbs and petcock to ducatiman (Gordon) at this outfit. Expert workmanship, reasonable fees and quick turnaround. Carbs will come back factory-fresh OEM clean. Bike will run like brand-new off showroom floor!

BTW - you can search for "clean carbs ducatiman" for reviews and kind of work involved to refurb carbs.

I second the recommendation of Ducatiman's work. I had him restore a set and they arrive back here in perfect condition less than a week later.

Whatever you do, don't use jets from a rebuilt kit. Kits contain non Keihin jets that aren't identical to the orignials, and you'll end up in an endless tuning project.

Carbs sitting with fuel for 10+ years will certainly present a challenge. Every circuit will, no doubt, be affected, likely clogged solid...requiring much more than a brush and a spraycan of carb cleaner. Every oring/seal will require replacement as will float valves with brand new. A lot to consider.
