I keep a printed copy of it in my tankbags. We're not likely to forget the basics (don't become part of the accident, clear roadway as safely as possible, handle traffic management immediately, don't yank helmet off, etc), but there are some good tips in that write-up that aren't necessarily intuitive.

Great article! In the UK there is a one day course available through many local ambulance services called "First Bike on the Scene" and the "whole ethos of the course is about dealing with the significant life threatening issues. Its not about teaching people how to put on plasters or frozen peas on twisted ankles, it’s about being proactive, recognising significant injury and giving help immediately." The course also deals with scene management etc. I hope to attend one later this year but they're really hard to get on as the interest is so high.

Kichu - you'd be amazed at how easy it is to take charge when SOMEBODY has to - it's almost like a natural instinct

Great Post!
Alex,
That is a wonderful post. I recently observed a head on collision between a cyclist and a car in Capitol Hill and had I read your article first, I may have been a little more clear headed. |

veryy good "good to know" stuff, its easy to not think about these kinds of things and hope they never happen but its a harsh reality that all riders need to/should face and be prepared for.

If you're interested in being useful in the case of an accident I would suggest taking a first aid course and obtaining your CPR certification. Know your limits and always put your own safety first!
I also feel compelled to say that there's a lot of stuff in the article that an untrained person should not be doing. There also are a few things that don't need to be done (document 5min HR and RR, seriously?). Still, it's good as an informational read. In the end I hope you realize that even the best trained person can only do so much without the proper tools. |

I took a course in accident scene management for motorcyclists through the following group: http://www.accidentscene.org/schedule.htm#tx I learned some valuable information. If anyone has the opportunity to take this course in hour area, I highly recommend it.

Thanks for posting this. Overwhelming amount of information. I had to take a deep breath while reading it. I hope we all will never be in a situation where we need this type of assistance or need to render this type of assistance.

Having called 911 in a wilderness area, pinpointing your location is extremely frustrating. The operator kept asking me for a cross street- there aren't any up where we were!!! We were lucky there was A road at all, and that it was mostly paved. This has the same problem- there aren't a lot of cross streets, and when you're riding, you may not be paying all that much attention to the last one you crossed. Maybe if you know the area well, you might know. Having the Park and Rec guy there who knew exactly where they were was helpful.
They tried to keep the guy from moving, and from taking off his helmet. That tracks with what I've been taught. I also noticed they tried to keep his neck/spine/head in a straight line even when he was rolling onto his side and sitting up. That's good. I was surprised by how many of the helpers still had their helmets on. Nothing that matters, either way, but it kind of surprised me. If I'm dealing with people and calling on the phone and all, I want it gone. This is my neighborhood and I've probably been through that stretch, so this was all sort of familiar; the hospital is one I've been to, I've ridden the Snake, and Las Virgenes, that kind of thing. I know sort of where they are. I'm glad to see they did a lot of things right in trying to help this guy. Thank you for posting it; it's disturbing, but hopefully we will do the right things if we come on a crash scene. |

I really couldn't watch it, and kept skipping ahead to view another couple seconds. I heard his complaints about trouble breathing.... collapsed lung?

It's safe to watch Bob, the gent does not pass on scene. The main take aways here are 2 things;
It takes a long time to get medical on scene when seconds count Trying to control an injured person (stop them from moving and such) is very hard

Didn't stop to take any pictures, but I saw flowers on the scene, a memorial. This must have been recent.
