Dirt bike crash type 3 tibial spine avulsion
I crashed (as I do) my KTM last Saturday. Leg got caught in forks (how?), went down to the right, my body kept going straight, heard a snap, manually reached in there and twisted my leg back into a natural position. Long story short my ACL ripped a chunk off my tibia. Type 3 tibial spine avulsion they call it. There is a chunk of my tibia "hinged" upward preventing me from bending or straightening my leg (and hurting, A LOT). Surgery to fix it on Tuesday. They're gonna drill a hole up through the tibia, thread a wire through, loop around the chunk my ACL is attached to, drag it back down, & essentially safety wire my tibia back together. Hoping the ACL itself is not damaged but since we couldn't do an MRI (couldn't straighten my leg) they are not 100% sure. CT scan I guess doesn't show ligaments very well.
And yes, it's as painful as it sounds. The ortho doc drained 60cc of blood out of my knee 48 hrs after the crash (I didn't go to ER since I take people there and I know the deal). Sigh. Off the dirt bike for weeks, maybe some, maybe a lot. I don't know the healing time. I do know that I'm 26 and healthy and heal very quickly so I'm optimistic! I was wearing knee guards, but not braces. And my full dirt setup.

Ouch, sorry to hear
I hope you're able to confirm that the ACL was not injured. An ACL tear could easily be worse than the break

Surgery went well but was really rough on me.. turns out I shattered the top of the tibia into 8 pieces... dont ask me why that didnt show up on CT scan. However, ACL is fine, and now reinforced with surgical nylon! Haha! I woke up screaming yesterday in so much pain it was unbelievable. I felt like someone had sawed off my leg below the knee.
Anyway they fixed it all up. Drilled 2 holes in the tibia, stitched up torn meniscus, collected and re-fit those 8 or 9 pieces of bone, stitched them back to the top of the tibia. Bet the bone looks like a cobblestone street right now. I'm on all the drugs right now but at least I can read and write and remember things today. Thanks everyone for your well wishes. I'm looking at 6-8 weeks for walking normally and 4-6 months for full recovery/riding.

He was at the SuMo track yesterday on the 150R, and had a chance to test them out when a 450 rider stuffed him and took out his front (and radiator) - so they have done their job a few times now without breaking. He had a custom one fitted, but returned it because they couldn't get it to fit properly. I thought they were in the $450 range. |

^I'll need to do some more research. It looks like prices vary a lot depending on which one you get. The ones I was looking at were $799 each, $1598 before tax for the set...
I'm not able to walk. Not really even as close as I would like to be. I can put weight on it, but bending is a big problem. I had 30 degrees range of motion two days ago, but have 40 today. Working hard on PT. Looking to get to 150.

Patience, time and ongoing PT @Finesse
Don't want to derail your thread, but I was T boned (foot crushed) in the '80's. No weight at all to foot for 4 months then the PT ensued..not near walking for a year thereafter? (can't even remember) ..permanent damage ..its still bent out of line a bit, sensitive, bones and nerve damage a little painful to this very moment. Not complaining, I was lucky to survive WITH a foot. And that the least of my worries as I've since survived something far more sinister and threatening (cancer). A positive outlook and goal, time, lots of patience and long term perseverance were imperative to overcoming both. And I'm STILL riding... this morning, in fact. Pullin' for your full recovery.

That's crazy. I have heard stories of similar accidents, lots of foot damage, people not even standing for months. So awful. No need to worry about derailing a thread, I love injury stories and it's good for me to hear about other people's recoveries!! I'm glad you've been pushing through all that and still able to ride!

Physical therapy is some pretty cool stuff. When I broke my arm into a spaghetti S shape flopping around and they bolted it all back together, I had almost zero hand use. PT brought it back 100%. Started out not even able to pick up a glass of water to drink. Now I'm buttoning shirts with one hand and turning on M4 nuts in odd places no problem.

I'm not into the whole "staying positive" thing. Sometimes things just suck. To not be able to admit that or not be able to vent or express yourself in the name of "staying positive" is unhealthy.

6-week x rays looking good. Got the brace unlocked to 60 degrees and got the okay to drive.
Bought a plane ticket for mid-October to go hiking in southern Utah. Walking with one crutch and the brace. It's exhausting. Still can't get the knee bent past 90 degrees. One day at a time...
