Aftermarket undertail questions
Ok quick question for those of you with aftermarket undertails. What do you do with the parts that attach to the factory undertail?? Like the fuse box and the other stuff (computer thingy...name really escaping me right now)
Thanks

I don't have an aftermarket undertail, but why not get a roll of double-sided foam tape or a few feet of velcro and just attach those components to the new tail?

I believe if you look at the HotBodies install for example, you "trim" the tray so the undertail fits over it but you still retain most of the needed parts to hold things together.

That might fix my fitament issues as well. Going to have to see if it will all fit together trimmed.

I'd loose everything and velcro the rest into the new undertail.

for the hotbodies undertail kit
DO NOT CUT THE ENTIRE STOCK UNDERTAIL PLASTIC... if you do your tail will sag and you'll have real bad fitment issues with your passenger seat or seat cowl how do know this? i did it my self so lesson learned guys Posted via Mobile Device |

i have the hotbodies undertail...i just used a dremal tool and cut about an inch off each side of the black plastic piece...i know mine was a tight fit, but i got it on...also they say you should remove the brake reservoir...i did, but tried to cheat and leave some of the small metal pieces and scraped some paint off...i'd definately take off all the screws and the metal piece that it attaches to and cover that piece with a cloth

All that I did was zip tie the things to the cross members. Seems to work good.

Its unpainted. I still have the box and all. I did a test fit and now I am trying to decide if I want to go with it or not. All the directions and packaging is included.

The install really is not bad if you have everything on hand that you need.
With the hotbodies kit it took trimming the stock undertail roughly an 1/8th to 1/4 inch back for everything to finally snug right up nice and tight. Took me way to long cause of multiple trips to the parts store for lost bolts and an LED turn signal flasher.

Doesn't the paint on the undertails get all chipped from road debris?
That aside, how's brightness on the lighting for the turn signals?

I have the smoked plastic because I figured road debris would ding up the paint. The LED turn signals are pretty darn bright IMO. Stock tail bulb is still bright thru the smoked plastic.
Instructions from hot body werent the greatest and you WILL need an aftermarket flasher to make the turn signals work. A dremel with cutting attachment will be your friend, my recommendation is to trim a little at a time and keep test fitting it. Ended up looking like this (just got the exhaust put back together from my paint project today)

yea i agree i even questioned him about that and it was the lighting cause from the pic and the first thing i did when i got it was put it next to the bike to see that match and it a lil darker than the bike but not noticeable unless ur really staring it down.....and what part are u supposed to trim down im totally confused about that.....i know the stock undertail but what part the edge where u screw it to the frame????? im confused

here are a few pics of where i cut mine...also the part where my thumb is needs to be bolted up...if it's sagging i can't imagine what else would be pushing it down...it's also a pretty tight fit and since that top part goes over your light, i would think as long as the black plastic is attached to the frame, it shouldn't move

Dawns pics definitely show the areas you need to trim back. If you take your time and trim a little at a time the thing will fit tighter then (insert cliche here)
Yes I used the L brackets that came with it and mounted the plate just behind the signals where the plate light gets. I actually checked with a couple cops in my area before I did this and they said as long as the plate is mounted horizontal and easily visible I would be good.

Only thing i had to do was zip tie the stock undertail up behind the tail light since once you drop the banana fender the bolt brackets etc are gone. Im available for PMs, AIM or other methods if folks need more help with the Hotbodies install.

if you're still having problems, maybe you should contact hotbodies...i had a question, and someone called me back right away....i don't understand what would be making it sag....do you have your tail light put in....it seems like the light fits in there so thight, and that thin piece goes over the light...i don't understand what wouldn't be holding it up

@yoda i have an idea to cut off the rivets from the banana fender and trim them off of the fender and possibliy drill some holes in the tail next to the holes where the screw went so i can still use the the same bolts and i might be PMing u.....@ dawn i was seeing how it looked without the stock undertail in place going to do it this afternoon with the stock undertail in place but i will surley call them if im still having problems

I still have the bolts and banana tail pieces and had considered cutting the threaded part off the tail piece and reusing the bolts but after 12 hours of screwing with it i really did not feel like taking it all back apart just to do that. So zip ties worked fine. Shouldnt be a problem if you do the cut before you have it all back together.
