Which bike to trade my bike for? SV vs CBR

A. 2001 Sv650
2000 rebuilt motor with 5k miles in good maintenance shape prepped for track. Street/track legal
B. 2008 Cbr600rr (salvage) 6k miles
Completely stock with all damage repaired and race fairings included. It looks to be totaled due to cosmetic damage. It looks beautiful but I don't have any pictures of it not wrecked.

If there's no major problems with CBR I think that's what I should get because the SV will need suspension work to track it. What do you think?

Your r1? WTF... keep it or trade it for an r6. You have tasted the forbidden fruit that is yami. Everything from this point forward will be lesser in cornering feel.

Of those 2 choices, the honda is a solid choice. You meet Kevin and his rr in FL. Solid bikes that can be set up very well.

I had a feeling that's what you'd say Chris. I'm looking for a cheap way to get a track bike with fairings and the R1 is still giving me some problems.

Based on the look of those two individuals and the location of that CBR, you can have great confidence that it has been ridden responsibly and well maintained. No chance of having been thrashed, for sure.

They only got to put 6000 miles on it. And no one out here knows how to ride a motorcycle. He was trying to keep up in a group ride.

You have to explain to the next buyer why your bike is a salvage title, I think.

I would assume that Floki would convert that to a "rebuilt" title so it can be licenced and ridden legal on the street. In the event that he sells it, it will be worth less as such.

As a track bike who cares... as a street bike, it is a consideration.

@bowser I don't have any pictures but I found those on his facebook. Not sure if it's a 600rr or 1000rr. I don't know Hondas. I just assumed that was it. MS has relaxed laws on salvage title, I just need to pass inspection. There are no rebuilt titles, just salvage.

Ummm... best check on dat mang. Asside of my 250's, nearly every bike I have purchased has been a salvage title.

Quote:
35.VII.07.1 Mississippi Administrative Code
Part 7, Subpart 7, Chapter1

100
In the event an insured motor vehicle becomes a total loss, as a result of an accident, and the Insurance Company becomes the owner of the motor vehicle and subsequently sells this vehicle to a salvage or junk dealer, the vehicle is considered as salvage and ceases to be a Motor Vehicle.
So in MS you can licence and tag a non "motor vehicle"? (trailers and such excluded of course)

/confused

I pulled this off the MS DMV site, "If you choose to keep the car and rebuild it, or have it rebuilt, you will need a salvage title to work on the car, then to have it inspected. You will also need a salvage title before you can sell the car to someone else."

I'll call them but it appears that I don't need a rebuilt title, just a salvage title and ability to pass normal inspection. I've never dealt with salvage so this will be fun.

You're in for some fun then. Because you're gunna need a "rebuilt title". I would bet a big face on it.

http://mississippidriverslicense.org...age-title.html

Quote:
In the state of Mississippi, insurance companies have the authority to declare a vehicle a total loss if your automobile is in an accident. If your insurance claims the total loss or the word salvage has been stamped on the title, it is illegal to operate your vehicle on any road in Mississippi. What this means is that your original registration on your vehicle has been cancelled, and you'll need to remove your plates off your automobile.

If the vehicle is restored, it has to be inspected before a Rebuilt Title will be issued. A rebuilt vehicle with a MS Salvage Rebuilt Title can be driven on the highways. Please note that your vehicle can't be re-titled until it passes a Salvage Inspection.

It's actually pretty easy, just takes time. It should be similar to this;

1. buy bike w/ signed (certified) salvage title
2. get rebuild form from bmv
3. fill out form
4. buy parts to fix bike (save receipts!!!!)
5. do werk!!!
6. schedule and pass inspection (get form)
7. take rebuild form, inspection form, parts/labor receipts, motor & frame number pics to bmv and file for "rebuilt title"
8. wait 2-4 weeks
9. get "rebuild" title in mail and go get insurance
10. go to bmv with rebuilt title and insurance to get plate and tag
11 WIN!

The entire process can take a painfully long time or go really quick in a small town USA. YMMV though...

You can save a ton of money buying salvage if you play your cards right. 6k miles on a 08 cbrRR is worth taking a closer look at. As long as you don't overpay for it. Price should be based on resale value of "salvage" not "clean". If not, walk...

OH OH OH!!!!!

Make for damn sure the odometer is present, functional and reads somewhere near what is stated on the title. Trust me... you don't wanna have to go through the feds to get the mileage adjusted. They assume your guilty until proven innocent and it adds months on the whole process.

How much track riding will you be doing that you know you need suspension work?

A-I don't, I have no idea how well the SV suspension would work. I'm just at intermediate pace so I'm not a novice anymore. Can the in adjustable suspensions handle hard track riding? I remember @Sirref having issues on the 250

Chris, the PO fixed the bike and I believe is selling it with a salvage title. Do you think I'll need his receipts for parts fixed?

How much track riding are you doing? once a month? every other months? or less than that?

Have you ever ridden an SV before?

I'd say try it as is and then determine how much work it needs.

Probably once a month, Ive ridden a gsx650f and ninja 650 and didn't like the ethos of either. I never tested the suspensions of them hard either. Not sure on how many actual miles the SV has, just 5k since rebuid

You'll be fine, the issues I was experiencing was stock springs. I'm still on those now and the feel is amazing...too amazing, I feel too much

Then I go ride the gsxr600 with suspension that's set up much stiffer and I feel nothing so I don't have the same mid-corner confidence.

Long term you'll probably upgrade most suspension setups anyway, a gsxr fork swap on an sv is relatively easy to do and will give you the adjustable suspension you may need. Really you only need it set for your weight which can mostly be done on normal suspensions with springs.

get an R6 dude, those things are sweeeeet
that or an 07-08 zx6r, a cbr600rr works well too and an 03 or newer gsxr is a fantastic track bike

If he has them, it will help you but if not... then you will have to note it on the paperwork somehow as "repaired by previous owner but not inspected". They shouldn't complain much about it really. When I bought my blue r6, the previous owner made all the major repairs to get it roadworthy. All I did was have it inspected by a mechanic at a shop for $45. The mechanic filled out his shop inspection sheet and I just included a copy of that with all the other stuff.

That honda has been in the swamp, it has water damage hint, hint... ijs, it needs all fluids changed, and an airbox/intake cleaning (cha-ching!!!) You won't have much problem finding $3-$4k worth of things that need fixin', inspecting' or adjusting.

I have a friend that works at the bmv, she told me all KY really looks for is VIN != stolen, Engine != stolen, state inspection = pass, enough repair paperwork to ensure it wasn't insurance fraud. I would bet MS is similar.

EDIT: It should kinda go without saying but... for everyone's benefit. Don't trust the sellers repairs when you buy it, assume it will have to be redone or at least given a once over by someone who knows what they are doing. If your gunna ride this bike on the track at 150mph... YOU WANT TO BE SURE!!!!
