Muffler mounting

Are the stock mufflers mounted on the inside of the bracket (closer to the wheel) or on the outside between the bracket and foot peg mount?

I ask because the bike I have which was purchased from a kid who high-sided it at least once has the inside of one muffler lightly rubbing against the swing arm. There are a couple rock dents and scratches on this muffler so I know it has hit the road at least once. Just from looking, I can't tell that the bracket is bent.

I am not sure he re-mounted the mufflers properly on the right side of the bracket. Given the amount of other stuff I have found wrong with the bike like loose, stripped motor mount bolts, missing and loose bolts and parts in several other places, I don't have a lot of faith that he put them back on correctly. If he did, this one has a bent bracket and I will have to figure out a way to bend it back to where it should be.

If I remember correctly, for a pre-gen it is bracket, muffler and foot peg.

The bracket is bent because it is soft, you can bend it back slowly.

@Alex will move the thread where it needs to be, no worries.

As to which side to mount the cans? It don't matter as long as there is no clearance issues, everything is straight and sealed as designed. But common sense tells me to mount stuff on the inside when possible to minimize wind drag. I know it's a little thing, but a bunch of little things turn into a big thing.

Someone who still has a pregen with the stock cans will chime in with the "factory" mounting soon enough I am sure.

I'll be home from Rome tomorrow afternoon and can look if still needed. My guess is that it goes on the outside though

IIRC, it goes on the inside. hang on, lemme dredge up some pictures to check because I'm too lazy to go outside


edit, yepp. looks like inside the peg in all variations of my exhaust cans.

Thank you to everyone who replied.

After finally having some time to get down and work on the bike for a little while, I found:

Mufflers must go behind bracket. There is a locating pin for the foot peg on the front.

The mounting tabs on my frame where the bracket mounts were slightly bent inwards. Must likely from where it was wrecked by the PO. It went down on that side.

I bent the mounting tabs back to correct position and now everything's good.

If you normally carry a passenger or if the connections of the muffler to the engine or to the header get loose, the bracket may bend in again with time.
Keep an eye on it.
