Is a wider rear wheel possible?

I have an '03. Does anyone know if we can get a 140 or 150 rear wheel tire on the back without making any changes? I know my buddies went up to a 150 on his '08 without making changes to the bike. Is there any advantages/disadvantages to a wider rear tire besides looking BA?

I am swapping rear swingarm, shock, wheels, ect... from a 08+ to my 92 to get better shock and tire options. Maybe that is more work than your willing to do.

The main reason to run the "slightly" wider tire is because stickier tires are normally made in wider sizes that do not fit the pregens. For me, BA comes second to function.

Get Pirelli Sport Demons, or Bridgestone BT45's in a 130/90-16 rear size. They're both very wide for a 130. The BT45 "actual" width is like 138mm. It looks wider on my bike.

but honestly, even though my rear is basically 140mm wide, I pull up next to a 600, and it still looks like bicycle tires. Whatever. Not worth the money and effort in my mind. Just get something sticky in a size that fits the rim correctly, and be done with it.

I remember a post on here where a guy was at the track and changed his rear tire. He left it up against a fence and another rider picks it up and says "who's front tire is this". hahahahah

It is what it is.....

theres no point getting a wider wheel or tire when you have 16" rims. it will do only harm. like the smart chris said, the only point is for sticky rubber. but when they dont make sticky rubber in 16", theres no point.

the higher rotating mass will slow the bike down. the tires are going to be more expensive. youll also change the handling characteristics so if you dont know what you are doing it can be dangerous.

The 17 inch wheel conversion is totaly worth it! With 17 inch wheels you can run better tires with a much better (round) profile and they have a better aspect ratio (more contact when leaned over). The rotaional mass is not that much more, because the tires tend to be lighter than the bias ply that are made for most 16 inch wheels, and the new gen wheels are a bit lighter. Now a 150 is over kill and will cause the bike to be a bit slower to change direction side to side. A 140 works great and fits with just a minor milling of the right caliper mount. I have done the 17 inch conversion on mine so I know it works.
