Boot problems

This is my first time wearing such high boots so I bought some cheap BILT Track Star boots from Cyclegear. In sneakers I wear a 12, but those were way to big so I got an 11 fits good but the top is still too big even with pants tucked in (I have very long and very skinny legs). Also I'm having a hard time getting my leg over the bike, the top of the boots are getting in the way. And once I'm on the bike with my feet down the sides of the top are going against the footrest and rear brake lever. It's also hard to get the kickstand up and down with these boots on. The top feels too big and bulky and is getting in the way with everything making it impossible to ride. Anybody else experience these problems?

Any picture of your legs in those boots?

If I make it so only the end catches the Velcro it looks like this and comes loose after moving around

So when I make it so only the end of the Velcro catches it's tighter but now the rest of the piece is sticking out and gets in the way

It's so hard to find the proper fitting things always has been even with regular clothes. Now with riding gear it's a nightmare even gloves they are all either too big or to small. Medium is too short and large has too much room inside. My hands are long and skinny but it's not that abnormal. I don't know why I have all these problems

Either too much room or to much extra material sticking out. I think these boots are just wrong for me

how many boots did you try on at cyclegear before deciding those were right?

I tried on some that were $40 but those were just leather and waterproof didn't really offer any ankle protection. And another pair that were low cut just went above the ankle. I tried on these in different sizes and walked around the store for a while in them they seemed fine. I didn't realize the excess room around the leg would interfere until I tried getting on my bike with them. I'm limited with options because I really don't want to spend more than $100.

True, but I have to much going on right now. I'm just trying to find something cheap that offers more protection than sneakers until I can spend $300+ on boots

You don't need to spend that much to get decent boots. The cheapest racing boots from Alpinestars (SMX-5) are closer to the $200 mark. Used boots could also be an option. Maybe you could get lucky and find a decent used pair.

The problem I had with tall boots on sportbikes is flexibility. I bought my current boots at a dealer. Each pair I tried on, I got on one of the showroom bikes and tried to brake and shift. The only boots that I was able to comfortably shift with were ankle-high. They are called Shift Racing Fuel Street Shoes. I've been happy with mine.

In sneakers I wear a size 12 but with the BILT boots those were too big so I went with an 11. In Alpinestars I don't know I'll have to try them on in the store and find out.

That's the same problem I'm having, I wanted something with more leg protection but it might not be possible with me.

Supposedly that's an size 11.5 so if they happen to fit you, then that's a great deal.

I'm going try and return these BILT's tomorrow, hope they take them back they got a little scratched up around the plastic while I was testing them out on my bike. And I'll try on the Alpinestars to see what size I am, hope they aren't as wide around the top of the leg. Thanks Rebecca and everyone else for all the help.

I went with these for the foot and ankle protection while keeping me dry this past winter and early spring riding season, and will get another pair from TCX for the late spring through early fall.

Mitchell, the above is one of the reasons the boots fit the way they do. Track or race style boots will have some extra room in the top area of the boot to allow for a shin guard and/or padding that are commonplace in full leather suits meant for track riding. You should find, if you were to put on a full leather suit, that most of the space would be filled by the gear. We see similar fitment issues with jackets and suits and a common solution is to fill the space with armor such as back and chest protectors.

Since budget is an issue for you, you can visit your local sporting good store and pick up some shin guards to wear under your riding pants. Take your boots with you, different shin guards will have varying thicknesses. Try some different ones on and you should be able to find a happy medium between fit and feel.

The extra protection will be there if you need it.

Also, check out A* gloves for long skinny fingers, they may feel tight at first but the leather will break in nicely to a comfortable but snug fit.

You can try some of the Bilt boots that are less sport or track oriented.
You still will have protection with Tourism type boots and better feeling on the controls.
They have more than one waterproof boot for around $60 right now.

I also wear a 11 and my overpant fits loosely over the top of my Diadora boots.

I have Sidi's and am also on the thinner side. When I first wore my boots I had almost the exact same issues you did. With time I now have completely forgotten about these issues. (Took about 3 months). Maybe stick with them a little longer?

Some people get icked out at the thought of wearing used gear, but you sure can save some money. I bought a pair of used but very nice Alpinestar street boots for $30 a couple of years ago, and they are still holding up well.

You gotta really pull those boots unusually tight. The Velcro will hold thought. Hold the inside down with one hand and give the outer side a good tug and clamp them down. Not the best boots in the world, but still way better than sneakers. I'm rocking them til I can afford better.
