Its just one thing after another...

HEy all,

New to these forums so I thought I would just introduce myself by complaining about all the trials and tribulations my bike has put me through... To make a LOOOOONG story short.... bought 96 250 ninja, spun rod bearing, 2nd engine cracked case, 3rd, broke my collar bone day I got it in... 6 weeks later put it up... HOORAY IT RUNS!!! No issues for about 250 miles... Girlfriend want to try getting on it alone... -.- Needless to say she drops it at a mind boggling speed of 0mph... So at first didn't notice anything wrong, rode it around for about another collective 25 miles. SO!!! That's short back story. This morning I felt adventureous so I decided to take the bike to work instead of my car. ( hour long commute) So I stop by the gas station fill it up due to I knew I was running on fumes. Left and headed on my way down 75... So I get about 5 miles down the highway and I noticed it was sprinkling... "Damn, don't want to get wet... I thought it was suppose to be hot and sunny here in dallas tx... Yep it's sunny... Damn, my eyes burn.. so does my face... I smell gas..." So I look down... Sure enough there was gas shooting up from the upper right fairing bolt on the tank... Pretty sure the drop had punctured the tank and I just never noticed before due to the fact that I had been keeping my fuel lvl low because of still working on the bike...NEedless to say My whole right side is doused in gas and to make things worse I have Muuzy exhaust that only comes out the right side... Figured I would end up looking like ghost rider on my way back home... Unfortunatley... I'm just not that cool. I made it home okay and had to take the car to work So I imagine tonight will be filled with lots of dismantling and jb weld... and beer ... Also, nice to meet you forum people. :P

As bad as that all sounds... at least you didn't end up on fire!

No matter how bad things get, it only takes a small amount of imagination to see how they could have gotten a lot worse.

I know nothing about fixing bikes, but my first instinct would be to track down where exactly the leak is coming from. If you don't see an obvious hole in the tank, maybe it's something further down (that strange switch for draining the tank maybe?).

lol... the human torch! welcome.

the tank puncturing was most like due to the drop, but also check that the correct bolts are used in that location. many pregen tank problems when people put the incorrect bolt back in that location. they are different.

some have had success w/ JB weld... some have not. I would recommend you take it to a welding shop that has worked on gas tanks before and get it fixed permanently. You don't want to find out your JB weld job didn't hold up the hard way.

Rub soap around to find the leaks. And hey... my boy has his bike (noobie, too) and I just dropped mind in the garage, cracked the glass oil site, cracked the front brake handle, and all i was doing was trying to park it. I'm not doing so well as of late. I thought I would get one more ride in before my surgery.

That would be quite bad ass though to see a flaming ball riding down the highway

Welcome. If you search, you'll find a few posts about repairing the gas tanks - I know I've seen them around here somewhere!

+1!!! I would count your blessings! Sucks to hear about the problems you're having though. But it'll just be that much better when you get her up and running for good!

Here's a video from a guy on our local forum that had his 250 catch fire on the highway!

Funny story about that - a friend of mine put an exhaust on his bike (Sporty 883) wearing his "mechanic's jeans" (the ones he always uses when he's working on cars and such). He took it out for a quick spin to make sure everything was okay, and at a stoplight smelled smoke... well, his jeans were covered in oil and grease, and they happened to hit the exhaust at the stop - and his pant leg was on fire.

As he's telling me this story, he says "I'm riding a Harley, so I've got to look cool, but my damn leg's on fire! So I calmly reach down and pat it out, then head straight home and change my pants". No burns or anything, but imagine what the cager sitting next to him must have thought!
