Need to use a Vehicle code scanner

Does anyone in the Eastbay have a scanner I can borrow? @lolibater

My check engine and all my VSC related icons light up yesterday when I started my truck. This is totally sudden and the truck is still running great, even better since my ****ing VSC does seem to activate so now I can freely carve a corner without it slamming on the ****ing brakes mid corner and causing me to have massive understir.

autozone might be able to do a quick scan and give codes, if nobody steps forward.

A code reader is definitely worth the investment. If you have a little cash to spare, I'd pick one up. It doesn't get used often, but it is an excellent tool for when one does pop up. I've had one for 4 years, still like brand new. A friend was having an intermittent problem where the CEL would pop up and go away. She would take it to the dealer and they'd say "We have no idea what the problem is because the CEL cleared itself." So it popped up again one day, my wife called me (luckily it was my day off), and I headed over there with the reader. Turns out it was a misfire code. She took that code to the dealer and dropped off the car. They investigated the problem. Ended up replacing the motor and gave her a 100,000 mile warranty on that motor for free due to the trouble it caused her.

A little cash to spare just went to a two day track day at Laguna seca for a $100 a day but the good news is one of my cycling friends had one and I got is solved and cleared I think.

I think someone tried to steal gas out of my truck and the a$$hole didn't properly retighten my gas cap so it was venting cuasing the error code. I say tried becuase my trucks been on Empty for the last 2 months sitting in my driveway since I never drive the poor thing.

I'd be cool to electrify my gas cap and really give those ****ers a shock next time if it wouldn't blow up my truck in the process.

Too bad they changed up the fuel systems on the newer cars. I kind of miss the good old locking gas caps.

Apparently, some of the chain mechanics shops (think pep boys) sued them, or threatened to sue them, or filed a claim with the state governing board for mechanics, or whatever, basically forced them to stop providing the service so that the mechanics could continue to charge 90 dollars for a service that you could get yourself by purchasing a 60 dollar scanner.

Yup. BTW, I once had a check engine light on, when I needed to get the truck smogged, so of course it wouldn't pass. I asked the mechanic how much to scan the truck, he tells me 95. But I was going to let him do the work of fixing it anyway, so I told him to go ahead and smog it, fail it, and fix it. So for 40 dollars, I got a failed smog test, with, yup, you guessed it, the fail code from the scanner ( the reason it failed the test).

So, I guess if you just scan it, it's almost a hundred, if you scan it and smog it, it's less than half that price.

I miss living somewhere where some of the mechanics will just scan it for you.
