a new bike that has been sitting
What are some things to consider when you look at a bike that has 400 miles and is a 2009. Mint condition fairings.. never been down or anything. Was stored in a heated garage.
Its at the dealer for a great price. Just wondering what things to consider.. its a cbr600rr

Consider how well it runs and how well the hydraulics (brakes) work. Look at the five year old tires.
And who are these people that heat their garages? |

I haven't heard it run. Dealer offers waranty though. Tires looked good. Again they were stored in a heated garage. It has swing arm spools so I'm guessing it was on stands. The bike is winterized so I doubt they'll let me hear it run

To buy? No run, no buy. Pretty simple there and starting it up for a few mins isn't gunna ruin it for winter in a heated garage and the dealer knows that too. So if they complain, run away...
Major List: Tires All fluids Lube all cables Chain maint. Battery Have them take the price of tires and a new battery off the selling price and make them throw in the first (delivery) service and then we would talk about a cash deal. And don't bet it was stored on stands, it would be best to assume it wasn't.

so you are ready for the SS already. Tires do need to be replaced whether they are cracked or not, the bike has not been ridden. Ask to see the service record. Pay attention to how long it has been since the oil has been changed. Ask how far the last ride went and how long ago it was. Bikes that sit for that long are not very valuable because of the extra maintenance required. The Gasket are likely dried out and need to be replaced.

miles or not if the tires haven't been replaced they should be. Breakdown of rubber yaddy yaddy yaddy. Probably fine but are you willing to bet your life on it?
Other than that it should be good to go. if you have that kind of cash to blow why not move up to a ducati or triumph? Miles don't really matter as abuse or care. And at least then you might get close to your cash back when you sell |

$6500 seems like an insanely high price for that.
I'm not sure about where you live but here in DC you can pick up one of these bikes with under 30k miles in good condition for about $3500-4500. I wouldn't get it for that price. if you ride the piss out of it and redline it and thrash it around for the first 400 miles, even if it looks mint, it could be on its way to being destroyed. you never know.

What is the book value on it? They may be asking way too much for it, even though it's got really low miles it's still a 2009 model, and isn't "almost new" at this point.
As noted - if the tires are original they are junk by now. Original tires are mostly sketchy when new, and after 4 or 5 years they are definitely in need of replacement. How do the brake rotors and chain look - any signs of rust? I would also check out the tank. If it's been sitting without gas in it for years it may have rust in the bottom from condensation. Off the top of my head it sounds like too much. |

The price is actually $7,000. I've been on craigslist looking at the cbr's for a while now and it's not a terrible price... is it a tiny bit high? Yeah, but I understand he's a dealer and needs to make a little profit. He's not far off either, he's only about $500 over what I would be willing to pay from someone on craigslist. Not to mention, I'm getting a free 6 month warranty with it... which alone is well worth the extra $500. Yeah... whenever you buy used you run the risk of not knowing what the previous owner did. Again though, I have that warranty... if anything is out of tune i'm bringing it right back for free service. Also the Original owner was in his late 30's and had twin kids... I know what they say when you assume... but, let's just say i'd be rather surprised if it was beat up real bad.

What is the NADA and Kelley Blue Book value for it?
Can't be that high... A friend bought a 2007 Triumph Daytona 675 with 7,000 mi for $5500 about 2 years ago. |

Absolutely no rust on the rotors and they chain had wax on it. I never got a chance to look inside the tank, of course I would check that before handing him any money. I'm going to think about it for a couple days, all in all, I think you are probably right I may let this one slide.

dafaq, how is that remotely a good price on craigslist for you?
I rarely see these bikes go over $5,000 on CL, even in the summer, and have seen them recently as low as $2,500. You can get a mint condition supersport for a lot less, don't let yourself get buyers remorse because you realized that down the line.

The general asking prices are higher than what I'm used to in the MD/PA area
however there are still a few bikes that are reasonably priced and still offer what you so clearly want. http://providence.craigslist.org/mcy/4776906960.html

Daytona 675 is a very sexy bike. Only problem is they are in VERY low supply here, actually I just checked craigslist, there is only one. And it is 14k brand new. I love the CBR600rr, I wouldn't want it for the track (That's what my 300 is gonna be for) it's just something for cruising around on the highway and what not. Regardless. it doesn't matter why I want it, I just do and no one will talk me out of the kind of bike I would like to have.. I mainly just want to know if this bike i'm looking at is a good deal. From what I gather, people say it isn't. So I will probably not get it, I will think about it still though. The main issue is the tires and battery... but tires are fairly cheap and simple (I know a shop that charges me a 6 pack to install em) and a battery is also cheap. My only real concern is what cbinker (btw, thanks again for pointing it out) that the gaskets probably need replacing. I plan on owning this cbr600rr for the next 5+ years. So I wanted something that could be completely mine and this bike seems like it with the low miles and absolutely beautiful condition.

Well then... I think you're getting taken. It's going to need at least fluids and tires. Try to negotiate to have that all included as a term of the sale.
500 for layaway makes 6500. A little under 6 weeks, we'll call that 1000/week. Divide by 40 hours a week and we get $25/hour after taxes. Where'd you manage that as a college student? If you're gonna flaunt numbers, peeps be curious. Btw, adding more debt for school when you're clearly making enough to pay the debt is silly. Silly silly interest payments. Silly! Oh hey, I want a motorcycle! Dear university of whatever, please just put my financial requirements for the year "on my tab" as it were. Thank you. not everything can be paid with loans forever, mang. I can use bold font also. So stop it. |

When I go back i'm going to ask to hear it run, if I like the way it runs then i'll ask them if they could go down to $6,500. since tires are about $300 and fluids and battery etc. would be about $200. If they don't like that number then I guess I'll walk. Although I am getting cold feet about the whole deal now, mainly because i'm thinking about how that bike had the same oil in it for 5 years....

I don't want to do this....
But if I were in your shoes, I would not buy a new toy. Your financial situation isn't looking great. It's good you're investing in yourself (school), but never be in debt for a vehicle. ESPECIALLY a 2nd toy! You have 1 toy already (the 300). Ask yourself this....do you really need a 2nd one? I know you're a young man. But please help yourself and delay gratification. Wait until you build a little financial cushion (safety net) before you go out and buy a 2nd toy. Really think about this long and hard. When will you have time to ride both bikes? You have your studies. You have work. Leisure time will not be plentiful. Also remember, you will be paying extra for insurance as well. I say you do this..... (again this is just my personal opinion)...take that $7k you will have by summer 2015 and take 9-12 credits during summer school. Get those classes out of the way and graduate earlier so you can start in your career earlier. This way, the bigger $$$ will come and you can reward yourself afterwards with a $20k bike if you like. Your employment status will most likely be more stable after you graduate. Again, just my own personal opinion. I don't want to see you put in a bad financial spot for buying a 2nd toy. Please don't be offended. It was not my intention. But whatever you do, I wish you the best and that everything will work out smoothly. |

Gratz on the job, yo! That's not bad money. Just make sure it doesn't get in the way of classes for the last what, semester? year? Two years? I forget where you are in classes right now I'm in a similar position with my co-op position, but that's only for a year and I'm saving for my final year of tuition.
I wouldn't worry about the oil sitting in the bike. Just have them change it as part of the sale. It's what, $20 for them including a new filter? Less when you consider that they get all that stuff at dealer cost. I think you're all hyped up about the oil (ZOMG OIL HAS BEEN SITTING!) when it's really not a huge deal. With 4,000 miles, it may be the original oil. Oh well. Change it. Take a sample in a clean test jar and have it sent out for oil analysis. A test isn't super expensive and will tell you about any chemical or particulate impurities (read: gasoline, bearing material, acidity, etc) that can diagnose any potential issues. I doubt you'll find anything wrong, but if you're really anal and it makes you feel better, go for it. Honestly, normal use from you riding it will cause more wear and tear than the old oil sitting in the bike for a couple years. FWIW, you already know my thoughts on your finances. School budget > toy budget. If you want to help yourself out, also consider selling the ninjette (private sale) to cash out and help with the cost of the cibber |

He already answered that, Jay. I got nosey the 3x step isn't hard when the original point of comparison is minimum wage.
Also, FWIW, FI isn't the magical bean that everyone claims. Carbs are very simple. And they fuel decently. For effort in vs effect out, carbs rank high. FI can be a pain to tune and really has a lot more moving parts to go wrong. |

Anyway, back to the bike. The dealer already changed the oil and did it's first service, oil change, chain waxing, other misc things. If you guys think that the oil sitting in the bike isn't a big deal, then i'll make sure I check the tank for rust, hear it run, and see if I can get them down a couple dollars more or get them to replace the tires/fluids.
