Takes forever to warm up
So I have an 05 ex 250, and once it warms up it runs perfect, however it takes forever to warm up to that point. I have to slowly work off the choke until it will stay running, then let it sit another minute or two until it starts idling at about 1500 rpms, then it will be good to go.
I've had the carbs out and done a pretty basic cleaning, but from what I've been reading it seems like the idle circuit might be clogged? But I feel like if that were the case it wouldn't idle even when warm. If anyone has any insight it would be great, thanks |

sounds like a good candidate for adjusting the pilot screws provided.....
A: the pilot circuits are, in fact, clear B: the EPA tamper caps on the pilot screws have been removed During your clean...did you remove the tamper caps then pilot screws/spring/tiny washer/tiny oring?

I just ride it gently around the block a few times. It warms right up.

possible valve clearance issue? tight can undeniably cause weird starting/running issues. Need to eliminate.
Tylor...current mileage and mileage at last known valve clearance check?

3.5 turns should deliver adequate mixture, preventing super lean long warmup.
At 18k with no known valve check...would be advisable to do. These 250's are especially sensitive to tight valves....I'm sure others will agree and chime in here.

Waited till 10k miles to even check my valves (I know, shame on meeeee) every one of them was out of spec. The exhaust valves were way tight and the intake valves were on their way over to being too tight as well. Had some minor hard starting issues and stalling every so often. She just loved to mess with me, adjusted the valves and she is a very happy girl.

I think it might be nothing. These bikes are cold blooded. If it takes 3-5min to warm up I wouldn't go dismantling the carbs. JMO
Then again after I warm my bike up once she's warm the rest of the day and no choke needed. So if you aren't able to do that then what these guys are saying is probably necessary.

at 18K (with no known history of valve adjustment) I'd consider a check mandatory...then reevaluate results from that point.
