Bike only challenge!

I'm issuing a bike only challenge!

Most of us on this forum are lucky enough to have both a bike and a cage to get us around. My car has been on the fritz the past few weeks, so I'm about to start week three of bike only transportation. There have been a few challenges, such as rain, spilled to-go drinks in my backpack, and figuring out how to get bags of dog food and water home, but so far, nothing too egregious...I dread the upcoming autumn fog, the brutal cold temps of a 6am winter morning, and most of all, those mornings when I didn't sleep well the night before and am uncomfortably tired, but I'm going to see just how far I can push it. A slight cheat of mine? I own a mountain bike that I use to go almost anywhere except work. Two-wheels, however, is two-wheels.

I think it would be fun for people to set different goals for themselves such as go a week a month bike only, for example. If a few of us did this and wrote up our experiences, I think it could make for some entertainment.

Anyway, I'm going to try keeping up with the ride on my blog, the good, the bad, the tough, the funny. My goal? My goal is to see just how long I can go bike-only. It may be 2 more weeks, it may be all winter (how is there not a "cold" smilie on our forum? ) I enjoy challenges like this.

I went a year without a car once, never again.

Beware of hypothermia, it sneaks up on you.

6 years bike only next month, it's doable

Last time I drove any 4 wheeler it was an army jeep with about quarter million's worth of optics & targeting kit in the back... Sgt who had signed for the lot was also a biker and after a few miles of backroad rally reminded me that it wasn't a sportsbike & shouldn't lean like that in the corners

I've never driven a car outside of 10 hours of practicing for the initial licencing test. Having only a bike has presented logistical challenges that were as fun as they were frustrating.

If you happen to take it to the extreme into the winter... it's remarkable how far clutch control skills can take you, even with IRC tires.

No can do because of my hobbies. Any savings by only going on motorcycle is going to be offset by the sheer freight and courier charges just to send my beautiful costumes across the country, and I'm not going to strap my $$$$ sewing machine on the back of my bike.

There is this picture somewhere of a motorcyclist on a highway dragging around luggage on wheels, but I can't find it for some reason.

I try to go bike only but I can't carry large amounts of groceries or other people on my bike. Also sometimes I start working on my bike and can't finish before I have to go somewhere the next day. Thankfully those situations are too frequent and I pretty much commute by bike only. Can't stand sitting in traffic in a car on the way to work anyway lol.

Been bike only since my car threw a connecting rod last december.
Only snow and ice on the road prevent me from using the bike during those times but all other times i will ride. Groceries are a challenge some times and require either my backpack or a duffle bag to carry them, now laundry day is another challenge that requires a full duffle bag hauled to the laundry mat, but it goes quickly with multiple machines going at once so i kinda like that.

My car has been in the shop for over a month now (shop managed to kill my transmission rebuilding it), so I've been getting a lot of use out of my bike. So far my biggest issue has been having to pay pizza delivery fees. I'm lucky in that I really don't have to leave my house if I don't want to since I can do all of my work from home, so I just don't ride anywhere if the weather isn't cooperating.

Come up north to sub zero temps for winter and you get a whole new perspective of winter. Thankfully though i'm not fully north like the people up in canada that deal with extreme cold temps and mountains of snow.

You can always bundle-up for cold, but you can't get cool in hell.

hot and cold is all perspective, for some 50 degrees is cold, for others 10 below is warm. my little sister goes to school in maine and she comes back for winter break and doesn't need to wear a jacket because 20 degrees feels so warm to her in comparison to the ridiculous cold they get up there

I rode my motorcycle the other morning in 40 degree weather and I was completely fine. Only thing that was gold was my gloves, but that's because they're crappy $20 summer gloves. Also my ankles were cold but thats because my stupid pants were too high for my ankles... so it was bare skin.

20 degrees is cold for riding a motorcycle for sure. But it's not that big of a deal.. Like Sirref stated, it gets really cold up here. I've had to walk home in -20 degree wind chill on a very windy day, I couldn't even feel cold anymore, it was just pain as the wind blew onto my bare skin. I never forget to bring my hat anymore, lol

Moving house 4 times and country once was a challenge, first move was emigrating to the next country over, ferry & 300 miles on the 250 with what i could fit in a bergen & rocket pouches. I had the rest sent over but can travel light.

There's some things you can't do without 4 wheels, picking up a TV needed a taxi, most other stuff could be strapped to me or the bike. Moving house involved recruiting buddies or hiring a white van man to move most of my stuff.

I used only a bicycle for transportation for almost ten years. I averaged 10-12k miles/year. Of course, I lived in Az at the time, so I didn't have to worry so much about hypothermia.

I had a child cart on my bicycle that I used (rarely) for my boxer. He weighed about 110 lbs. Luckily, he usually just ran along beside me. The ninjette would look kool with a sidecar.

All I remember is:
- Falling, a lot, people are still asking me where my fairings are.
- T6 oil results in a smoother startup in winter
- Trying to calculate my temperature after 70 mph windchill in 0F weather while on the highway and nearly missing an exit.

I'm in this situation right now with my bronco having a busted rear end and the golf, well its an old golf it breaks every month. Walked out the supermarket with several bags of groceries and one lady actually stopped to see if it would all fit in my back pack. Had to make another trip for dog and cat food. And will probably have to get more dog food before the week is over since the 20 lbs. Bag is far too big for my book sac. Can't wait to have my cages on the road again and it hasn't even been two weeks. Not to mention without my bronco I can't haul my new Yamaha wr450 to the trails.

Other than my dogs, I have no family to carry around.
I get my groceries on my mountain bike 99% of the time. I can carry quite a load home with my saddle-bags and backpack. The only major difficulties are 24-packs of bottled water and 35-pound bags of dogfood. Pretty much everything else transports with no problem.

It's been a crazy long, exhausting day, so I may sound a bit stupid, but what are you talking about, G-B?

Nice Bent. Very similar to what I ride. I assume there are studded tires on that?

Road a year in upstate N.Y. back in the 80's (Saratoga Springs, area) got to say, one must be young and dumb to make that work.

so here is the things I learned... Carhartts are your friend, once piece, over-sized. You want them big enough that no matter what you are wearing, you can step into this fabric "shelter", jump on your bike, and go.

I had something called "hippo hands" they were these mitten like things that attached to the bars of the bike. You could put your bare hands in them and cut the wind, rain, snow, didn't matter... when you took your hands out the openings rotated down so they wouldn't fill up with leaves or rain... They were for snow machines, but worked fantastic for cold weather bike ops
