Used purchase, tune up

The guy I bought the bike from purchased it from the original owner in January 2010, with 1500 miles on it, I bought it this month at 1700 miles, he said when he received the bike he changed the oil and did standard maintenance until he stopped riding it. I took a experienced friend with me to check out the bike and he came to the conclusion that it was solid.

I was thinking about looking around or asking some friends for a trusted mechanic to take a full look at the bike and do a small tune up of the bike to make sure everything is good until I need to take it in for the next big tune up. I do however intend to do all the basic maintenance such as changing the oil and checking levels.

Should I seek the help up a mechanic or should I be able to do the tune up myself and get it ready for routine riding. If so, what should I replace or check on, such as change the oil or brake fluids or check various problematic zones.

Thanks,
Chris

Here's a site which is probably used by a number on this forum is- http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Main_Page
-Lots of useful info
-Harbor Freight can be your best friend if you plan on doing the work yourself and need a certain tool (torque wrench, etc.)

I'm going to assume that your experienced friend looked at the bike and found that it wasn't dropped/screwed around with.

1. Change the oil and oil filter. Nothing wrong with changing it more often. Never assume that the previous owners changed the oil.

2. Do the 600 mile maintenance. Do not assume that the previous owners did the 600 mile maintenance. Basically, it's an oil change, inspection of hoses, lever/control freeplay, and checking the torque of selected bolts. This thread should give you most of the information you need; if you have any questions, feel free to ask. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=19368
