$350 for Col./Comp./Li.
Which isn't bad since I'm under 25, single, and on a sport bike; which is a combination for super high premiums. For NJ residents check out Riders Insurance. |

One thing for sure with car and bike insurance is that you have to shop around. You haven't even tried if you don't have at least 4 quotes and 6 quotes is better.
Don't believe the hype "drivers who switched to us saved an average...". Well excuse me, but why would anyone switch to them if they had to pay more than their current insurance company? So if only one guy out of a million drivers actually get a lower quote with them, and he gets quoted $500 less, and switches, then he becomes part of the "drivers who switched" average. The other 999,999 guys got higher quotes, didn't switch, and aren't part of the average. I think this is what Alex calls BS statistics. My car policy just came due and I thought I would get a quote from 21st century because of all their ads on TV and claims of low rates. Turns out they are among the highest. I was quoted about double what Geico charges. So even if 3 companies give you ridiculously high quotes, the fourth may be reasonable. For my bike, that was progressive, but others have had the best rates with other companies. The difference between highest and lowest was a factor of ten.

I thought I was getting a good deal but after seeing some of these I may need to make some calls.
I'm 21, male. I pay $400 a year for minimal liability 30/60/50 and comprehensive with $500 deductible.

Insurance Question
Is a 250cc motorcycle always going to be cheaper to insure than a 650cc motorcycle?

My friend was asking me if I would upgrade to a SV650 and I told him I probably wouldn't for several reasons. The first, being that I'm still a fairly new rider and only have 7200km (4500miles) under my belt, and the second reason is because in a few months I'm going to be a father and I don't need to be spending extra money on insurance. He told me sometimes it depends on the bike, and the SV could actually be cheaper than the ninja. I didn't believe him so I'm asking you guys. Judging by Alex's statement, I suppose the year of the bike has a big influence on the price you pay... so if I bought a 2003 SV650, hypothetically speaking, would the insurance be cheaper than a 2011 ninja 250r because its 8 years older? |

insurance agent here:
Comparing insurance quotes with other people is kind of apples to oranges since there are so many factors involved that have nothing to do with the bike. The same bike with the same rider in New York can cost half of what it costs in Florida. More so, there are credit scores, loss history, discounts etc to consider that can weigh substantially on the premium. If you're comparing bikes, the most reasonable way of getting an idea of what the premiums may be is by actually getting quotes. You can't get insurance on a bike you don't own but as long as you have a VIN, you can get an accurate quote. |

I've had dairyland insurance since I was a kid. Every time I shop around its less than half of what anyone else is. weird little place in Wisconsin. Hella cheap on bike insurance though. Never used them for a claim but they have been around since my dad was a kid...I'm almost 40.

Maybe m11 can confirm, but I think it also depends on what "style" the bike is. Something considered a sport bike might be more than an adventure tourer, because the perception is that you will be going fast on a sportbike, and not so fast on a tourer. Reminds me of the BS years ago about companies charging more if you drive a red car.

Up those limits. 15k per person for injury is a pittance (the state minimum). You can likely get it up to 100k/300k for a surprisingly small bump in premium.

Whether it's a 250 or a 7000 pound hummer, if you're found partially at fault in an accident such that your insurance needs to pay out, 15k is just too low. 3 days in the hospital will exceed that in many cases, and a few months of physical therapy can be multiples of that.
The hope is that you never ever have to use your liability insurance. The reason you carry it is so that in the unlikely event that you ever have to, you have enough to cover the likely losses and protect your existing assets and future earnings. 15k/30k just isn't enough to do that.

I'm 16, live in Georgia, havent taken MSF YET, this is my first bike, i've got a clean driving record(although i havent even had my license a year yet), i have my motorcycles learners.
Through Geico I pay $395 liability only a year. I think thats pretty good. American Family quoted me something over $1000 a year just for liability? Geico it was. |

I have recently upped my coverage to include uninsured motor vehicle and $10K in medical and it went up to $450 a year. The expensive part is the medical because in FL they assume that if you want that, you aren't using a helmet. I always wear one, but I have to pay anyway. So shop around some more. I was only riding a few months when they quoted me the $150 rate. In FL, motorcycle insurance is not required, which also keeps the rates down. I decided to get insurance anyway because in FL there are a lot of bike haters. Some @$$hole keyed my seat the other day. Fortunately, its not too bad, but he's lucky I didn't catch him or the results would have made the headlines.

I use Dairyland. I pay $648/year for full coverage on my Harley and Liability on an 85 Honda Rebel 250. That is for me AND my 16 year old son to ride both. They have a few different plans to pay. all at once, 3 times a year or monthly.

haha yeah I missed it. I actually called SF today and they quoted me a price for my cars half of what I am paying with met life.
For bike insurance I am paying way less than half of what anyone else quoted. Progressive was almost $1300 for FC. I almost tripled my payment when I added my 16year old. I was about $260 for FC on the Harley then I added the kid...bamn. ton of bricks. it cost me an extra $1800/year to add him to the car policy. Also the thing is none of us are comparing apples to apples. Each states minimums are different. Insurance went down a lot moving from phx to Aus without changing companies or coverage. Lots of theft and accidents in PHX.
