Nails, nails, and more nails...

Is it my imagination, or do motorcycles pick-up nails easier than a car? I've had two in the last year, and I don't drive by any construction sites. This time I'm springing for the nomar bar.

I was just about to post that I haven't picked up a nail in years, but then remembered making a similar statement about speeding tickets a few weeks back, and was rewarded less than 90 minutes later. So I will refrain from any comments about my own bike's proclivity for picking up nails.

But it does seem to be more common on bikes, perhaps it's due to the shorter wheelbase being the right distance for the front tire to knock them up a bit and the rear tire to get spiked by them. A longer car wheelbase gives them more time to sit back down on the ground, maybe?

I think you may be onto something with the wheel base theory. I think it is also because bikes use the whole lane and not just the two tire tracks on the outer edges but that is just my theory. I always get the road hazard protection when I buy new tires but I still have to deal with the down time if I do find a nail while riding

Yeah but normally they don't take very kindly to being called nails

Your chances to pick one up are greater if you roll over far from the track of the car's tires and if you speed.

The rear gets punctured by nails and screws much more frequently than the front tire.
The front tire makes any debris jump and rotate.
Any laying nail flips under the pressure of the front tire just in time to be near vertical when the rear is reaching that point.
The faster the tire rolls, the more flipping energy is given to the nail or screw.

Go slow along constructions sites !!!

Cars' and trucks' huge tires either pick or push around damaging debris.
For that reason, the paths of those tires are cleaner than the center of the lane.

Same applies to the exterior of curves and turns, where those things end up due to the centrifugal effect when they fall from construction trucks and vans.

Broken glass tends to damage the front tires more frequently.

That reminds me something else: avoid rolling over any flat piece of wood.

Wood and nails go together.

maybe it is a conspiracy in your area, you should ask other motorcyclist if they have had an influx of nails recently.

I think you're all right, especially about the conspiracy.

I'd imagine an additional factor is it's probably easier to puncture the little bias-ply Sport Demons compared to the steel-belted radials on the SUV.

it's because cars all follow the same path. bikes ride in the center of lanes and inbetween where things fall and car tyres don't typically go

Sticky rubber more prone to picking up things?

Put Ride On in your tubless tires and you pretty much don't have to worry about nails, much less having to dismount them.
