The other "Keven" hosted the last SoCal tech day in San Diego/Chula Vista, so a lot of the confusion likely stems from that.

So this is the list of things I bought today, and stuff that I bought last weekend

1. Pods
2. Leds
3. 12v for phone
4. Jet Kit
5. Cover for my bike (doesnt have to do with tech day, lol)
6. I think there is something else, I just cant remember

If we wait a month for the tech day then I'll be able to get buy my exhaust and I'll probably be up for another oil change, and I need to do my 7500 really soon. Then we could install it ALL on the tech day

Might be a little much for one, what do you guys think? If someone else would like also, I can show you how to install LED's in there bike or anything like that

Maybe if we just shoot for next weekend for a tech day... not sure when I'll get my exhaust, I have to wait for my money to clear (should be tomorrow morning) before ordering my Yoshi full exhaust. If we decide to do a tech day next month instead I may need to meet up with Cuong or Alex or someone that knows jetting and has some parts (hint, hint) because I wouldn't be able to have the Yoshi sitting in my garage for that long without installing it...lol

I don't blame you. I put two washers on carb needles Sat. It was a pain... stripped two screws, dremeled them to slots and got them off. Replaced all 8 with alan heads in case I need to make adjustments.
Will I need to add another washer when I put that exhaust on? Should I pull my snorkel?
So yeah I am just as excited for you to get your full exhaust as you are

I'm currently running with 3 washers on each and I pulled my snorkel as well... it runs really well this way. Glad you are as excited as me...lol.

I guess I "disappeared" for the weekend... Happy Mother's Day!!

I checked with Crissy/ManyCavies and she's totally cool with us hosting a Tech Day this weekend (or next?). The temperatures won't be that bad, but the "gotcha" is that the winds will be. And that's the serious part, if you aren't familiar with the gusty wind conditions in this area then I really don't want you to mess with it. (We can always do it some other time, when it's nicer here.)

Anyway, that's the current option from here. We've got a spare bedroom and a couch, maybe Keven has space in the area too. What do you guys think?

I work this weekend. But next weekend I am off. As long as it happens on a day that I don't work I'll be there.

Sounds like everyone is pretty busy this weekend... I'm guessing that next weekend might work out better for a lot of people. That GSX-R swap is a tedious one... good luck, I watched Alex and Cuong work on his... let us know how it goes!!!

I have a bunch of extra jets from Dynojet. Just an FYI, dynojet is headquartered in Vegas so it's one day shipping if you order directly from them (if you need the needles). This applies to us Socalians btw.

Could I buy some mains from you? I'll have to do some research on what I should use, I'm thinking #100 or whatever the next step above that is. And ill just use washers for now until I get the sportisi jet kit. The sportisi set seems to be cheaper and comes with more. Anyone have any feedback on there kit?

are you removing your airbox? if not, the stock 98s will work fine.

Yes, I just ordered my pods, they should be here in the next couple days. I have stock exhaust right now, getting the Area P next month. What do you think Kelly?

I think you should do all of your intake and exhaust mods at once and then jet accordingly, unless you like to reconfigure your jetting multiple times.

My approach is to change the hardware to whatever you want first, then jet to match the hardware you've selected.

then be ready to jet multiple times.

as I said, with the stock airbox, the 98 mains will work just fine. when you move to pods, 112s or 110s. this is using Keihin jets... if using DJ mains, you'll need to do the conversion.

I think I'm cool with taking it all apart a couple time I find it enjoyable

Ok, so with stock exhaust, kleen air removed and pods a 112 jet should be fine? (108 DJ) and three washers? Thanks kelly

that might be a bit rich for a stock exhaust, but try it and see. if it is, drop the mains to 110s or maybe even 108s. when you go to a full exhaust (race?), follow the jetting tips that come with the installation instructions.

Look at what arrived at my door today:

OMG... I am so freakin' excited!!!! So, from reading Kelly's post above... should I go ahead and get whatever I need for the pods as well so I only have to go through jetting once (I know silly question, of course I should)? Also, Cuong... you have a good variety of extra jets right... would running with my stock needles be fine? Don't really feel like spending the money on the kit if I don't really need it.

since you guys are spending some serious coin on your bikes, seem to enjoy modding and have capable people to help if you get stuck, I would think you would want the bikes running the very best they can. If so, I'd recommend spending a bit of $ and get a jet kit of your choosing.

Shimming the carbs is a quick, easy way of supplying the engine with the additional fuel it needs, but to be precise and to have complete control over tuning the carbs, a jet kit is the only way to go.

if you decide to go the shimming route, here's a great source for jets for our bikes...

some great jetting info...

Kelly, don't get me wrong I'm all about doing things the right way... I've already shimmed my needles, 3 under each and Cuong has plenty of extra DJ jets that he is willing to let me use. I just don't see spending $75 when all I would really get out of it is the needles that allow you to adjust how they sit which is exactly what I did with the washers. I checked your website and see that I can get jets for fairly cheap... but Cuong already has a bunch of those... do I really need the needles or is shimming the same thing?

I'm down... my only problem is that I will need to go out the day before (like I did to Keven's) to drop off the parts as there is no way I'm going to be able to carry this on my bike... thats a heck of a treck to make three times...lol. At least the 1st and last time would be in my car though (gotta bring back my old parts). Definitely not trying to discourage anything just talking out loud

I've been know to go with the crowd so let's figure this out!!!

Dustin,

don't get me wrong, either. my suggestion to consider a jet kit comes from the fact that you guys seem to have a good thing going and have enough techies among you that can help with doing full rejets to get the most out of your bikes.

jet kits give you 2 things that shimming will not. Proprietary (identical) needles and R&D, based on their experience, to obtain what they consider optimum results. The needles are what you're really paying for in a jet kit. You could always buy the mains and pilots from other sources, but you cannot buy just the needles from them.

I've always been a rabid supporter of shimming the stock needles (still am) and for many of the people looking for a quick, easy, cheap way of making the stock bike run better, shimming is the answer. Do it once and you're done. There are a few "problems" with using the stock needles. First, they aren't identical. The left and right even have different part numbers. For some unknown reason, Kawi put different needles into the left and right carbs. My guess is that it has to do with emissions as the pregens come with identical needles. Second problem with stock needles is that you can not go leaner than the stock needle position, only richer by adding shims to raise the needle height. Last is that they are very lean needles and right where the bike needs more fuel (taper diameter and length), they are lacking.

Will your bike work with what you have with just adding different mains? Sure, but again, you're not getting the the maximum amount of power from that nice, new, expensive exhaust you just bought. Does it make sense to spend all that money for an exhaust and not optimize the jetting? You can be sure any dynos you see from the manufacturer reflect jetting that wasn't a result of simply shimming the needles.

still not convinced? take a look at GeneJunkie's dyno plots from her AP install. two have plots using shimmed needles and the third is with a jet kit that was optimized by Kerry Bryant at AP. see the significant differences from the shimmed and the jet kit plots? (read the text under the dyno chart)

http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showp...18&postcount=3

if it were me and I just spent over $500 on a full exhaust, I wouldn't hesitate to spend a few bucks more for a reputable jet kit to make sure I was getting the most out of my engine.

respectfully,
kelly

What all do I need for the pod filters? I have the right pods, but isnt there another filter that goes under the pods?

@Ken: Looks like I can get my exhaust, I have to wait for something to clear. Can I just have the exhaust shipped to your house? My backpack isnt going to fit an exhaust, pod filters, and all the other crap lol

Or maybe dustin can pick the stuff up on the day he heads up?

Yes! So far we've got two exhaust projects scheduled.

Hopefully the wind will be better next week too.

Any other players?
