Bars are uneven?

I noticed today that my bars are uneven - at full lock right the bar-end is about 1" from the tank, but at full lock left it's almost touching. My bike has been down on its left side.

Everything seems to be working fine, and it goes straight if I take my hands off while decelerating. Is this something I need to worry about?

Not really, it's more visual than anything. Although some riders are very sensitive and hate the feel of uneven bars. You can take off the bar and try to straighten it or get a new one.

Or the forks could be tweaked just a tad too, loosen the triple bolts and see if you can shake them back straight. There is a how to floating around somewhere.

Thanks, I can only tell by looking, it doesn't feel uneven at all. I think I'll leave it alone for now until I have to take some things apart for another reason.

Are you the original owner? Has the bike been dropped? I'm guessing one of the bars is bent from a drop.

Fairly common problem, but it requires replacing the bar.
part # 39058 or 39058A

I would suggest a PM to @PartsNinja

It has been dropped on that side. I'm planning on eventually turning it into a track bike so I might hold off and just replace my bars with clip ons.

There you have it, odds are it's slightly bent, if you have access to a tourch, you could remove the assembly and heat it up, and straighten it yourself.

SIDENOTE: the bolts that attach the bar weights, and attach to the top of the triple tree have the dreaded red loc-tite, apply heat to remove these.

The strongest torch I have access to is for lighting cigars. It is, however, fantastic for that purpose.

A small propane torch is more than enough to do the job. 11-12 bucks at the local wal-mart or hardware store. Commonly used to sweat piping together or other small jobs. I mostly use mine for cooking and hard to loosen bolts.

I should give myself and achievement for that one. "From the Garage to the Kitchen". hahahaha

Oh!, it will lite your stogies too.

I actually have one of those as well in the kitchen...

Don't want that propane smell all over my fine hand-rolled sticks though.

Good call, that will do it as well, just takes longer, but you don't need to heat the bar up too much, just enough to straighten it.

Unfortunately the NewGen is a one piece set up, unlike the PreGen which the bar and riser is separate. In some cases people have machined the bar insert from solid round bar, old front wheel drive axles are the preferred choice for this.

check the tabs on the triple to see if one is broke off or bent.
