At lunch today I rode without gear

just bare hands, tennis shoes, jeans and shirt, no helmet, gloves, not even my glasses. I rode across the parking lot at work to park in the shade.

And it felt all kinds of wrong...

At least my ass won't get cooked when I leave work this afternoon.

HEY! I haven't ridden the R6 in awhile, mainly sticking to Valentina! My boyfriend is going to track out the R6 soon so maybe I'll get lucky and get to ride her @ the track vs on the street.

Didnt mean to be a thread hijacker. At this point i even feel weird riding into the garage from my driveway without gloves. My HD buddy said I should get some fingerless gloves for the summer and I can borrow his open face helmet as he can't ride with it. I just say maybe, and gear up.

why is it that cruiser riders don't get geared up? I've always wondered. Do they have less of a chance of going down or something? Or is it a style thing? i have never seen a cruiser rider in any type of gear except those ugly helmets and maaaaybe a leather jacket.

You jacker! I think the worst I've done was taking my helmet and gloves off when someone else was opening the garage door and pulled my bike in. And that was super weird.

I think it's a cultural thing. I think to them it's too weird to gear up or they are afraid other cruisers may not accept them. They have this notion that since they are on a cruiser and not on a sport bike they can get away with not gearing up.
I think the stereotype is in favor of the cruisers.
If a rider is on a sport bike with nothing but his helmet most people would say "look at that idiot". On the other hand, if a rider is on a cruiser with nothing but helmet I'm pretty sure the driver in the car doesn't even notice what gears the rider has on.

Cruiser riders not wearing full gear is entirely aesthetic. It's just part of the 'tough biker' image. And while statistics say that large-displacement sportbikes crash most often, not wearing all the gear because you're statistically less likely is just like playing Russian roulette. Statistically, you only have a 1 in 6 chance to be killed, but it's still freaking stupid. Pavement doesn't discriminate.

EDIT:
Ok, so the Hurt report doesn't mention sport bikes specifically, but the European version (MAIDS) does, and general perception is that cruisers are safer.

I feel naked just riding anywhere without a backpack on, much less my gear.

There is a world-wide event for cyclists:

Should one be made for motorcyclists?

Actually, there are some Harleys and Buells that I'd like to own, it's just that they're generally way out of my price range.

If I take a quick test ride on my street w/o helmet, my head feels too light. It isn't unpleasant, but different. But without exception I am GATT: Gloves All The Time. Seriously.

I ride my dirtbikes/quad frequently without gear. Dirt is soft, asphalt isn't. Admittedly, I only ride without it when I'm letting someone else use it who has none of their own.
