Hard Core
So what do you feel it takes to be a "hard core motorcyclist"?
I feel people who are "hard core" ride no matter what the temp is. I'm not saying improperly geared, but riding whether it is over 100* or under 40*, rain or shine. I think you haven't ridden a motorcycle unless you have been on yours through a nice rain storm. Maybe you need to also take your street bike offroad once. Those are my thoughts, just a few, not all. What do you think it takes?

Hardcore is a form of music. As in Happy Hardcore.
I think people who go to the track are hardcore. They obviously like riding a lot. People who don't own a car but own a couple'a bikes are pretty hardcore too. I'm not hardcore, but I just sold my car to buy this bike. I definitely love riding. Once paid off I'm buying a truck to stuff it in though. |

I'm with Apex & Snake on this one. Then again, that opinion may be a bit self-serving as that would qualify me as 'hardcore.' Usually don't feel that way, but tend to agree when it's below freezing out (currently 15F) and I'm still riding

I spent my last two years at Syracuse University carless. I did have an R-60 BMW with a sidecar. Put some agressive tread tires on the bike and sidecar, put two cinder blocks in the sidecar, and was OK. It was cold and wet, but we all survived.

A challenge...
If you are riding your bike down THIS road, then you can consider yourself to be either a) crazy, b) a nut, c) a hard core motorcyclist, or d) all of the above.

I would consider hardcore people who ride in all weather. My friend was riding his ninja 250 until several weeks ago when it was probably 20 degrees out, probably lower, due to not having a functioning vehicle. I thought that was pretty hardcore because he looked like he had hypothermia after he rode.

I used to be "hardcore" for about the first ten years or so of riding, but for the last several years I've found that while I still love riding I don't like being cold and wet. When it's crummy weather I am happy to be "softcore" and drive my cage.

My 250 is my only form of transportation and so far she's been wonderful.
My MSF coach summed it up pretty well: "Motorcycling is handling discomfort with extreme enjoyment" I never smiled when I went out driving in a car to run errands. Now I go out every day I have a few hours free and ride around just for the sake of riding. It's kind of funny when I'm just going right down the block to buy something and I spend more time adding and removing gear than I do in the store. I have yet to ride in the rain as we've only had two rainy days since I got my bike but I'm sure I'll get the chance this spring.

Well according to the OP im pretty hard core. I've rode plenty of days in the rain. I've rode in below Freezing temps, and on 110 degree days in full gear.
I've rode in rain coming down sideways, and thunder and lightning. I don't really consider myself hardcore though. What I consider to be hardcore, is somebody who has been riding for 20+ years, and after all those years, still rides in any condition. They must have rode a wide variety of motorcycles, on and off road. They must be a very good rider, and be able to ramble for hours about past experience on two wheels. I do make exceptions though, for instance I consider anyone that is missing a limb, such as a hand, foot, arm, or leg who rides as hardcore.

I've ridden in freezing temps and done thousands of miles in the rain and I don't consider myself "hardcore." I guess I'd have to be a racer or own multiple bikes or something to fit my definition. I'm just dude who's been riding a 250 for a year and a half as his primary (only) transportation, though I got a lot of "HARD CORE, DUDE!" responses when I A) Rode it 600 miles home from the dealer in the rain and B) Rode it coast to coast in late December '08 (freezing; raining).
The rain suit is useless. I used it TWICE and gave up. The first time was at my first gas fill up a block away from the dealer when water literally POURED out of my sleeve and straight into the gas tank. The last time was when I left work and made it to the first stop light when I was called back (Bluetooth helmet kit) and asked to stay over for a couple hours. In that short amount of time, the water flowing down the tank went straight through the suit (I honestly can't see how) and soaked my crotch area. @#$! |

2WheelGuy: yup, definitely hardcore. O_O
The most hardcore riding I've done was at around 2°C with lots of slushy snow falling down, forcing me to wipe my visor every 5 seconds or so, getting damn cold and wet hands, and nearly losing sense of touch. Wasn't fun. |

I would have a garage like that man, but my wife would kill me. She is so against motorcycles, I was very surprised when she said I could keep mine (after I purchased it and brought it home without her knowing).

I've ridden my ol 250 on snow, slush, and ice.
Just recently rode my 600 through similar conditions with nearly bald tires. Does that make me hard core.... or stupid? |

When I lived in colorado, I would ride if the temp was above 35 F. I knew it was going to warm up to 70 after work. I always carried rain and winter gear.
Somewhere I have a picture of my old BMW with snow packed on the front. Terry |

Hard-core! I have no clue. I guess riding for over 40 years and luvin it just as much now as I did last year (and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that...).
Hard-core! Loving all bikes, not just Jap, or Harley, or Euro, or dirt, or street, get the hint. Hard-core! Riding by yourself because no one else showed up, and still going cross country, and loving it more (because it's you and the bike, not you and your friends). Hard-core! Riding with your arm in a sling or your leg in a full cast. Hard-core! Not riding the girl on the back because you can't get into the corners as good. I guess it can mean a lot of different things. P.S. Craig nice garage and pics. I have a few also (it's not a one up it's a common interest); 1982 2009

Nice bike, first year Ninja. I raced one at Pocono right out of the box. Put it together at the track, used practice for break-in, raced and won all in the same day. Great bike.

I rode on the stock Dunlops until they actually wore enough to warrant replacement by manufacturer recommendations. Top that!
I rode my Ninjette as an only means of transport for around three years. Below freezing, well above 100°, rain, ice, heat, every day. I've hit some light dirt and was looking into dual sport rubber for a while. I even taught my daughter how to fire one up, at 10 months, took her first of regular rides at two. I've decided to keep it as the original Quarter-Concours. 30k miles down...
