I guess the "those motors are done after 50k" comment I heard the other day was a lie.

People act like 50k is a small amount of mileage out of these engines and that if the bike has over 10k that's too much. Meanwhile at the rate that these people ride these engines would last them 40years

Yeah that's what I'm starting to gather. People were saying since it turns such a high RPM doing it's daily tasks, that the life for a 250 will always be lower than a larger displacement engine; all else equal.

I was starting to get mildly depressed that I was approaching my bikes "mid-life crisis", but it seems that it is far from that.

Difference is these bikes were engineered to be high revving and live at that pace. A properly maintained engine should last over 50k. But either way, a new "used" engine is not very expensive

Not if you're talking about my mileage, I'm on my third engine. My first one only lasted about 35-40k miles, and on my second one the tranny started having problems after about 35k miles or so. The engine was still running fine though. Probably should have had the tranny rebuild rather than changing engines as this last engine isn't as good as the one I pulled out. Others are getting quite a bit more mileage out of their engines than me.

Just under 21K on the 06 and about 5K on the 07.

@TonyKZ1, just curious, but what do they act like when they are starting to go bad?

loss of power
loss of compression
excessive oil consumption
hard to start with low octane fuel

which leads to, could always get new gaskets and rebuild cheap with new pistons and what not..iv done that a few times on cars.

I just rebuilt my 07. The previous owner treated it really bad. Like running it without oil and using Champion plugs. Based on my experience, I think it would cost around $300-$400 to rebuild a Ninja 250 engine depending on what was wrong with it. The biggest expense is the bearings because nobody makes inexpensive aftermarket ones.

However, a used engine is around $500 delivered.

Is it better to rebuild, or buy used (low mileage) then?

If you know what you're doing, it's usually better to at least start to rebuild it, then check into what the parts will cost to fix it.
With a used engine, you rarely know what the engine is like inside.
But if you aren't that mechanically inclined, you will probably want to use a used engine, because it takes a good bit of mechanical skill to take it apart and then put it back together again correctly.

No the original engine began making a knocking noise at 40 thousand. It is on its third and that engine is making a funny noise. I have disassembled the original engine and found nothing wrong. I think the noise was in the clutch basket. I am going to rebuild the original engine and return it to the bike so the numbers will match.

Google is your friend: "76000 km in miles" gives the answer.

Is that with the original engine?

yeah mate, australia never got the 250 ninja, they were marketed as the gpx250 here although rego papers still say ex250. the rego papers for my zzr however actually say zzr250 instead of ex250H
