riding/motorcycle backpacks

Anyone have any experience with anything out there?

I have been using an old book bag for riding i have had this bag for close to 15yrs and it finally needs to be retired as the zippers are broken.

I have wanted to get a more specific riding backpack for a long time but the one i had worked fine so why? But now that it is no longer usable i am in the market for something.

any info from experience would be appreciated.

I've heard good things about the kreiga r25 and the ogio mach series

personally I use any backpack that has the ability to hook the straps together and I'm fine with it

I have a Kriega R20 backpack that I ride with and love it. I highly recommend it. I also use my Kriega R20 as my carry-on, when I'm traveling around different places, or use it as my "purse" when out of the country. The ergnomics on this backpack is very nice, which is why I use it for more than motorcycling. It puts no pressure on my back whatsoever, you can literally stuff this thing to the brim (which I have done) and not worry about how it will effect your back. It's also hydration ready, so I put my hydration pack in it and put the tubing through the straps and I'm ready to go. After using it for quite sometime, I do wish I got the R25. Another feature that you can add to this, besides a hydration pack is a back protector, which Kriega makes as an accessory. They also have pockets you can attach, drybags, etc. It's easy to put on too, with any type of leathers as well.

that's actually a pretty good idea, I never thought about that but that'll help prevent stuff that's in your pack from crushing through the backpack into your back

Yep, made by Forcefield. I don't have one in mine because I already wear one in my jacket. I also don't carry sharp things in my backpack that may cause injury to my back. I put those kinds of things in the tailbag. I ride with my Geigerigg hydration bladder, which works differently from other hydration bladders, you have to pump it, so it leaves a gap between the things I carry, which in a way adds more protection (the bladder is actually bomb proof).

I've had thoughts about a bag that tears away when crashing. My current bag caused me to roll when I low sided, and sent me tumbling. Hurt. lol

I am using the Ogio Tribune 17 which is a nice and roomy backpack that holds most everything i need to carry in it, and i have managed to stuff 4 2 liter pop bottles in it everytime i need to fill the stock back up. :P

sounds like there are lots of decent options out there. Nick, interesting thought on a pack changing the way you may roll and or slide in the event of a crash.

My back comes out pretty far. Had it been slimmer maybe I would have just rolled or slid. But my back caused me to be thrown up. Makes sense hopefully.

I've been doing some research and it is hard to make a decision with out having any to try on. The Kreiga 20 looks pretty solid and has lots of good reviews, The various Ogio's have decent reviews but a few reviews make me question durability and comfort of the mach series in particular. A* has a few decent looking bags as well.

I guess it will come down to how much i want to pay, $150 + for a pack seems a bit extreme to me so not sure i could justify that, and there seems to be some decent ones in the $80-$100 range.

Did a half marathon with my Kriega R20 today, felt no pressure on the back. Kreiga really has the ergonomics down.

what ogio do you have and what do you think?

I ended up buying a Mach 3. They look cool and seem to have some decent features and figured it was worth a try otherwise I would be left wondering.

It should get delivered today and I can give it a go maybe Weds or later given no downpours. As long as it is comfortable and I can fit my normal stuff in it I will probably like it.

I had the super-slick AXIO hard shell backpack (the one with a speed hump) and sold it.

While it looks amazing and is very well made, I found it to be far too limiting. Too many dividers inside. There was no big cavity you could just chuck stuff into. If you're the kind of OCD person who has everything precisely arranged just so at all times -- and assuming your preferred organization matches the intent of the bag's designers -- then it's cool. But if you just want to go to the freakin' store and buy a bunch of bananas, you're SOL.

I think Kriega has the right idea... just a simple bag with a well-designed harness.

I also have an AXIO tank bag that doubles as a very nice backpack. That's what I'm using for now... but if I get a new pack it'll be the Kriega R25.

I'll pass on the back protector insert. Armor should be held snugly, close to the body. I don't want my back protector moving around.

Crashing while wearing a backpack can lead to hyperextension of the spine. Whenever possible, it's safer to carry stuff on the bike rather than the biker

I was looking at that for awhile, until I learned the ergonomics aren't that great in comparison to the Kriega. If you check youtube, a guy did a comparison on both.

I've got the bandit. It's not one of their moto specific packs, but I use it for school and I needed something that I could carry all my stuff in and keep it organized. It's been a good, sturdy backpack.

The Kriega seems like a much nicer riding backpack than the Icon Squad II I have. I just wish it also came in a hi-viz color.

Things to add,
I have had it for a little while now. I like it more, i wear it very low on my back, it works pretty good. If you get partial tuck you can get the air to go down your back really well and it feels good on hot days. I had it loaded up with a small box full of junk that weighted around 15lbs probably, the pack still felt pretty good on my back. The box was around 5"x10"x12" any box much bigger in either direction would probably not have fit.

It converts between a backpack and a tank bag and has a ton of room. Plus it has a clear map/phone pocket in the front, extra padding, headphone cutouts, and folds out to hold your helmet.

I have got a fox skater back pack thatworks great. Its kinda slim but can carry a laptop or change of clothes of I can stuff it and have enough for a few days.
I like the straps on the back that I can hang my helmet from. They also cinch it in tight after I close it up so its not all loose. And I can strap it to my pillion seat like a tail bag with all the straps on it or as a tank bag around the tank of my old cruiser. It was even comfortable ridding platform for my 35lb beagle that used to ride with me.

then I have a junky old pack that is smaller and has straps that buckle together.

I always keep one of those string back packs in my tail incase I need to to carry somthing that my pockets dont fit. I used it to carry take out the other night. I put the food in it tide it to my passanger seat and cliped it in place.

Motorcycle specific bags are nice but pricey

I love that bag for it's size and many pockets. My gripes with it are the super flimsy straps. Yeah I guess they need to be that way to fold in nicely but at that point, I usually don't find them worthwhile to use. The helmet holder didn't work for me either; the straps didn't stay tight.

The straps definitely don't look they'll support anything heavy. The clips they were attached to were the ones that failed on me, though, and I had to replace them with carabiners. Haven't had a problem with the helmet holder - the two times that I've used it...

I ride with a Jansport bag, one small and one large if I ever go on treks. It works.
