Well...it happened...and I can't believe it happened..

Its been a week since I started riding casually on the roads. And well guys...I dropped my bike for the first time...and I feel horrendous.

Rode the bike to campus in the rain (first time in the rain) and I was parking it. Had to roll back into a curb. It was at a incline.

Was rolling back too fast and didn't want to hit the bike next to me so I brake while my wheel is turned and I lose balance, I could've kept the bike from hitting the ground but the handlebars were wet and slippery and I couldn't keep myself up..

Dropped it on campus with a poopload of people around..

Embarrassed the f*** outta me..

The end.

Happens to the best of us, brother! Don't be too hard on yourself. I dropped mine trying to do a u-turn in my cousin's driveway and felt like a moron afterward. As long as you're still walkin and talkin, it's all good.

How'd the bike handle it as far as damage goes?

The bike is ok, the glass on the right turn signal popped up, but it didn't shatter, I think I'll be able to put it back on no problem.

A few minor scratches, but nothing too bad.

Wasn't wearing gloves, I plan on being ATGATT but I'm currently waiting to receive my gloves, they're in transit to me.

Could've been worse. At least you didn't drop it in the middle of a turn on your way to school on a busy road that most students take, and then have FOUR cop cars come by to check out what happened, making everyone on campus think you were arrested...like I did.

Oh noes. The only time my bike went down, I wasn't wearing gloves either. Of course, that's because I was at work and the wind knocked it over.

Forget about the embarrassment, about people around you and about what they think; ...........you will go through that several more times in the future, unless you quit riding now.
This adventure is between your bike and you, no one else.

The important thing here is to learn what bad input controls you did and trying not to repeat them again.

If you were doing all that while siting in the bike and crabbing backwards with your legs, there were 95% probabilities that what happened did happen.

When you do so, you lose all control over a tip over when your supporting foot is forward while the bike is rolling back.

If your bike is rolling backwards, specially downhill and on wet pavement, your front brake has no business other than making you lose any steering control: your front tire will skid, always.

Anytime that my bike is rolling backwards, I am standing on its left side, holding the left handle and the rear handle because there is no other safe way to do it.

Anytime that your front tire locks up, release the front brake and re-apply gently:
there is no point in keep braking simply because after that point there are not braking or steering effects. As soon as you release the grip, steering resumes, in any condition (except on sand).

I would have preferred to have dropped mine in front of a 100 strangers. Instead, I did it at a stand still... in my driveway... while dismounting the bike and talking to my husband. Why did I drop it? Because that kickstand doesn't magically go down on its own. :/

Ah well, at least I was past my first month and 100 mile mark (which is the window I expected to do something so silly in).

Try not to beat yourself up too much, I'm told it happens to seasoned riders on occasion as well.

Yeah, something that ALMOST happened to me recently at the gas station!

I always pull up to the pump, put the bike on stand and take off Helmet/Gloves for filling up (allwhile on the bike, keeping it level) then go to the cashier desk to pay.

Only this time, I didn't put the stand down. After I finished filling the tank, I got off to pay, and the bike started tipping... caught it at the last moment!

That would have been embarassing for sure as just at this time another rider group stopped for gas...

I hate being without gloves. It just doesn't feel right. I was working on something on the bike, was hearing some funny noise, so I took it out on a test drive around the block to see if I could hear anything. Didn't wear the helmet because I wanted to be able to hear better. But yes, I wore gloves. It just doesn't feel right without them.

I wanted to reply to this sooner but didn't know what to tell you, still really don't.

I'd assume I instinctively pressed the front brakes, even though I know how much of a big no-no it was. It was my first time having to stop the bike against my will so I made a judgement call, it was the wrong call, but maybe it was the right one, had I sped too far and hit the other guys bike or knocked it would that would've been worse, at least to me. I know how much people care about their bikes and I didn't want to be "that noob" that would hit someone elses baby.

Also I pulled up to park this was the display "\" is a bike and "_" is a empty space.

\________\__\__\___\__\__\

2 underscores are a good amount of space between the bikes

...........-> (I pull up over here to park next to the bike all the way on the left)

\________\__\__\___\__\__\

By the time I started crabbing back into the spot my bike became like this, and my handle bars were still turned and I started rolling down.

../
\_______\__\__\___\__\__\

A mixture of poor judgement of spacing and knowledge of my bikes capabilities, along with being in a situation with unideal circumstances. (raining heavily, first time having to unexpectedly stop the bike, risk the chance of dropping someone elses bike or mine, no gloves)

Hope that helped.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you can't quite flat foot on your bike? I've come to realize that flat-footing certainly isn't necessary during normal stop-and-go riding; but my worry is that it will become a problem (at least for me) in certain situations, like in a hilly, wet, and crowded parking lot.

It will. Trust me. Getting off your bike may not look cool to park it but hell I can't back out of an incline while standing on the bike.
