Will drilling holes result in lost power?

Will drilling holes between the bolts on the stock exhaust make me lose power?

No, but it won't gain you any power either.

General "rule of thumb": Don't drill holes in an otherwise perfectly good vehicle.

I've never understood the fascination some riders have with making their motorcycle louder.
Louder equals more attention from Officer Friendly.

As for the argument that noise gains the attention of dumb cagers, that's what a horn is for.

Vlad, are you planning on drilling the holes for more noise? If so, I got an older JISU can that's a bolt on that will get you all the noise you want.... :P

You know what sounds really cool?
Sleeping in late on Sunday morning without being woken up by your neighbour's noisy bike.

Haha, straight pipes? Thats too much for me.

Good sound doesn't mean as loud as a fighter jet doing a fly buy.
I personally don't like the sound of the stock pipe and can understand wanting to make it sound better. But to each his/her own.

Not noise, deeper sound. Not the Harley type of noise.

I'm no expert but i believe you would need to disassemble the pipe and drill the holes on the inside then put it back together.

You don't want to just drill them straight through the pipe.

If you realy want it to sound good i would look for a good slip on. I had a Danmoto on my 250 but even with the baffle it was a loud ass pipe. I have a Two Brothers pipe on my 300 and it is awesome. Its not insanely loud (you can have a normal conversation next to it) but it sounds so good. Much better the the Danmoto on the 250.

You may be able to find a used one in good shape.

Guy wants a louder exhaust, let him have it. I wouldn't go drilling holes, slip ons are rather cheap and sound + look nice.

At least a slipon has a perf tube and glass packing. Seriously do you understand acoustics at all? You have to muffle to some extend to get the low rumble without the huge rasp. Just drilling holes releases all the nasty rasp the stock can is attempting to muffle in the first place.

Bleh. It will sound like poop. At least a silly slipon will sound rumbly. Better than a muffler with a bunch of extra little holes in it.

Want to change the sound?
Start by changing the intake noise first and see how you like it.
1.) Snorkel removal
2.) add 2 needle shims
3.) install an aftermarket drop in filter.

If that's still not enough then go for the slip on. BTW you'll be already 3 steps ahead of the game when you get the slip on.

Deeper means accentuating the lower frequencies and limiting the higher ones... So, you're looking for the longest slip you can find.. A full exhaust system will also give more "throat"/deeper sound, but it's hard to remove the high pitched whine from 12K RPM's.... So, it will be raspy no matter what you do....

THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I cut a couple of holes in the airbox and the sound is pretty awesome...

Also, removal of the Kleen air emissions stuff, and a little filter instead opens up valve/head noise and helps with the throaty sound....

This reminds me of that one time I ran the bike without a valve cover on... sounded wicked, like it was from the 1920's....
