It's a good point about the possibility of doing damage when realigning something that has come out of place. I don't have the training for that, so I would be keeping things in the current/displaced alignment.

another very interesting item to note in this video is the comment made near the end by the guy with the camera.

He turns to the driver of the car the motorcycle hit and he says, "Didn't you see us?"

It's a human psychological protective mechanism that immediately kicks in after an event like this: the mind immediately begins reshaping the history of the moment into something you can live with later in life. The camera guy was the third motorcycle into the intersection and at that moment in time you can be sure he knew for absolute certain that the first two bikes had run a red light. But in the immediate aftermath his mind is already reconstructing the memory into something he prefers.

This is the psychological mechanism that helps (some) people to side-step the effect we now call Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I can just about guarantee that if two years from now you could find this guy (the camera guy) and ask him whether the light was red or was green, he would tell you it was green.

Psychology is such an interesting subject. But I am not sure how someone can live with them selves for doing that to another person. It was completely his fault, trying to be a hot shot. I dont see how that girl could ever talk to him after the shock of the accident wears off. I am no lawyer, but is it possible to sue that guy over her injuries?

I watched a rider get hit by a very small doe, it hit his thigh and calf. He kept the bike up. The impact shattered his femur, calf, and ankle. He was wearing sidi's.

A rider should feel and be responsible for his/her passenger in all circumstances.
No skills = No moral right to carry a passenger.

Nobody has the right to cause so much damage and pain to a young person.

Really hope that she recovers and that he never rides again.

The "reshaping" of the memory of the crash is to help him remember it being "not his fault." He won't want to be the one responsible for the girl's injury.

But, dude, asking a guy going through a green light why they didn't stop for you running the red is asinine.

I've worn bike "shoes" in the past; gave me the willies when I would go out and ride knowing how much protection I was giving up for a little comfort and anonymity. Now I just use my weird looking shoes as a conversation starter.

A squid is not defined by how they look, bike they ride or what they are wearing. It's defined by how they act, treat others and how they ride. Believe or not... there ARE track squids. In full gear, race prepped bike and all.

Not true there is some good mesh gear.

Why do you think anyone who rides at highway speeds and does not fully protect themselves is a squid?

They don't offer any more protection than cheap hightops... Save your money and go to Payless if you want comfortable casual leather riding shoes.
They don't feel good to walk in, they have no arch support, they aren't comfortable really/ or on the bike for extended periods, you sure can feel the pegs in them though, just don't step on any rocks
I liked them too, but I like my feet more

So back on the first aid thing....
If you are alone and sever a part or are bleeding badly (dying). Remember your exhaust is very hot and pressing the body part against it might help cotterize the wound.

Pretty low cut and wouldn't restrict movement much. Not worth it. It may have helped though. Anything more than tennis shoes would have helped.

Once you wear a quality armored sport/race boot you won't want to ride with anything else.

It's just not worth riding in minimal gear, no matter how long (or short) the trip or how hot the weather.

You are getting some pretty strong opinions here, but know that they are coming from people that have experience with such things and know exactly what happens when things go bad.

You're getting some exaggerated answers about the A* riding shoes. They do have some plastic armor in them and use "abrasion-resistant" material. I'm sure they're better than a pair of regular shoes.

The question comes down to how much better they are. They have a lot of compromises compared to dedicated boots, as others have pointed out. Depending the details of an accident, they may completely protect your foot/ankle from any injury. It's possible that the girl in the video may have had the exact same results while wearing these. Without parallel universes or tons of very precise experimenting, it's all what-if's and speculation.

Only you can decide what tradeoffs you're willing to accept in your own gear. Many here will point out that a little extra cost or inconvenience may greatly improve your chance of avoiding injury, and they think that's a very good value. Some people figure they'll either never be in an accident or won't survive anyway and choose to wear no gear whatsoever. You have to determine what levels of risk are acceptable to you personally.

With the impact she took, I think even my race boots would have left me injured. Maybe not as bad. The big issue here was the riding, not the gear.

An EMT friend of mine was talking about first aid when alone, he said it can help depending on the wound and how hot the exhaust pipe is.

Another trick always let someone know your route if you are riding alone. Setup check in stops and times.

Tourniquets are much better. Rip up a shirt, use a sock or a belt, tie it tight and stop the bleeding.
