knee pad, maybe

Could his knee pad have touched and caused the rear wheel to lighten its contact. I don`t race so I don`t know if a racer is allowed to or supposed to touch that pad. Is it a `bad` thing to let the knee pad touch or scrape the pavement...

The reason they have the knee pad is so that they can touch the ground

The reason riders drag knee is to gauge how far they're leaning.

I saw a video after that comment, and the guy was leaving a spark trail from his knee pad, So I guess that's what it's for alright.

From the sound, he gunned the throttle when leaned over. Poor throttle control throughout, probably his first bike.

That's what knee sliders are there for, when you're leaning in to a sharp corner you stick your knee out & are able to judge how far you're over so you don't do what the guy in the video did

They're velcroed on so that if you do put that much pressure on it you're more likely to lose the slider than lever the bike off the ground.

Road racers can get through a few sets during a weekend, I've seen a few spectators collecting them from the ditchline once the road opens after each race

Some are designed to do that, they have chunks of zippo flints embedded in them, most don't

@Whiskey & @nickjpass: aahhh. Didn't know that. That makes sense. I always just thought that the knee out was just a natural thing riders did to balance and the slider was just a safety thing. I've found myself sticking my knee out without evening thinking about it when I've made a steeper lean angle than normal (which isn't much: I've still got the little rubber feelers sticking out the sides of my tyres Chicken wings.).

I've never touched a slider: are they lubricated, or just smooth plastic?

they're not lubricated just plastic (polyurethane AFAIK) same as the sliders on most bike boots & race gloves

I'm surprised I knew that and you didn't haha

Here's an excerpt from motogp.com

Quote:
Knee sliders are made of thermoplastic compounds and they guide the riders who rely on the feel of the ground as they slide through corners at lean angles close to 55%, brushing the surface of the track as they do so.
They're compounds of different materials. Some have titanium rods inserted to create pretty sparks. Old fashioned sliders were bonded leather.

Not that I have tested or anything, but the pucks on my A* suit, my word. I have to use a flathead screwdriver to peel the spent pucks off. I don't see them coming off before I come of the bike.

I've never lost one of mine, but I see a few go missing at road racing, where racers have had 'close encounters of the ditch kind '

After watching the original video (and zooming in at 10x) I noticed a sheen on the road which leads me to believe some butter or peanut butter was placed on the road to create the video.

Most likely target fixation.

I feel bad for that guy, and the bike.

If you listen closely at the very start of the video you can hear him almost lose it into a classic Mullholland lowside, but he saves it. The problem is that when he gets it back upright he's fighting a mild tank-slapper and can't steer through the corner.

The way many ninjette.org members pour money into their ninjette * cough @saxnbass cough * I'd say we can stand to loose quite a lot. Also: the level of emotional attachment lots of us have for "our" ninjette * cough @Jiggles cough * I can picture many of us crying like babies next to our bike after something like that.

That guys swings his fist and shouts f**k.

The average ninjette member is more likely to pause for a moment before dropping to her/his knees and billowing a single syllable word, to be heard for miles... "NOOOOOOOOOoooo"
