The fact is that you really don't save a significant amount of time by riding that fast. Try doing your own tests. Do the same route twice, once taking all those risks and once riding within the limit or close to it. You might be surprised at the result.

Sorry, but there it is.

I get a laugh out of people who blast along as fast as they can, tailgating, speeding, weaving in and out of traffic.... only to be held up at the next stop light. I see it every single day on my commute.

Speed enough and it will not only be very expensive, you also stand a good chance of losing your privileges.

Be smart.

At the risk of being a wet blanket, do your homework and find out what the consequences of multiple speeding tickets and high speeds are in your home state.

Depending on the laws, you're looking at one or more of the following:

Fines (which can be stiff)
Suspension of license (unlikely but possible)
Revocation of license (only in really extreme cases)
Sky-high insurance costs

How much is it worth to you? Speeding costs in many ways.

You don't need to travel at the speed limit, but at least travel at the pace of traffic.

In many states 20 over is reckless driving and loss of license.

I accelerate fairly aggressively up to 10%+/- over the speed limit.

I love how people in BMW's, rusted out minivans, alero's and riced up civics see this as an open invitation to race. 9 times out of 10 they go flying by me... only to have to slam on their brakes at the red light, where I've paced myself to know exactly when that light is about to turning green so I can double check the intersection and proceed through.... I usually don't have to put a foot down at a short-med length light.

Funny, I pass people all the time in my Altima, but it takes a lot to get me to pass someone on my bike. I guess I'm having too much fun just being on the bike to care how fast I'm going, but in the car I have much lower tolerences.

I used to collect 2-3 speeding tickets every year. Each speeding offense is worth 3 "demerit points", and 3 points are automatically removed every year. Still I racked up 20 points, and got a warning from the Motor Vehicle Branch about the imminent demise of my driver's license. It took that to be the wake-up call, and I've had almost none since then - for over 20 years. So there is hope for you young dudes yet, but make sure you live to see the day the tickets stop!

I've gotten 2 speeding tickets on my bike, I got one in my car a long time ago, but I drug it out in court so long it got thrown out.

In Alabama, you can go to traffic school up to 67 times, as long as you get a ticket in every county.

On my bike I got a 74 in a 40, which put 5 points on my licence.(wish I would have went to traffic school).

The second one, was a 71 in a 50. I went to traffic school for this one even though it was only a 2 point violation.

At 24 mph over the limit, he wrote you up for the highest margin that would still allow you to take traffic school in California. I think it can become "reckless driving" at 25 mph over.

They used to allow people to take traffic school once per 18 months, I'm not sure if that's the same or not. One of the few good parts is that you can take it online instead of spending the day with a bunch of grumpy people at some location you'd never go to by choice.

There are dozens of traffic schools online. This is the one I've used in the past: http://www.4lazy.com. I'm not sure if they still take them, but if it's an option use promo code "1000" to save a few bucks.

Some traffic school rules vary by county here in California. Some counties do have a 20 over limit, some have a 25 over limit, and some have no limit. Not too long ago, I was able to take traffic school for 40 over up in Lake County. (deserted road, new ZX-12R, sue me. ) The 18 month rule is a statewide rule, though some counties do allow a "level 2" traffic school for folks popped within those same 18 months, but the school is 12 hrs instead of 8, and costs quite a bit more.

My license is points-free, and has been for quite awhile. My insurance bills thank me.

You can request traffic school every 18 months, not 5 years. Sometimes they allow it 2x within 18 months if you get lucky, I think someone mentioned this above. I know from experience lol

Hey bro how's the bike paint doing?

Well I'm just grubbin some pizza before I go out to ride. Which makes me remember that if you eat a bunch of food before you go ride, you won't want to speed anymore. That'll slow you down for sure.

Good thing I'm only running errands in town today. lol. I ate too much pizza while waiting for my chain lube job to dry.

I try to live life like there is no tomorrow. I have to admit that i was a speed demon and lost my license because of it. I used to own a honda prelude. I am more careful now but i have to admit once in a while i just have to push the throttle to the max, just watch out for those speedtraps

You can't live your life in fear all the time. If i'd listened to my parents i wouldn't be a part time trucker or have ever owned a bike.

With those things i take precautions. On the road i try to stay alert and always try to be aware of my surroundings, do my pretrips to ensure that my equipment is in good working condition to prevent most mechanical failures and report any defects or concerns to my mechanic. On my bike i always wear my full gear all the time and follow the rules of traffic when there are other motorists around.

I would never put anyone in danger out of need for speed but i'm pretty sure a big majority of ppl here went over the speed limit on their bike at one time or another.

I respect your evident attention to safety.

You still lost your license, though.

I neither ride in fear nor do I obey every law out there.

But going so far as to have my license yanked? Nah. Don't need to push the envelope that far to have a good time.

And if you do feel the need to push the envelope that far, might as well take it to a track. Trackdays are cheaper than a few speeding tickets (or worse).

From your responses to others I thought you were without faults. I am glad to see that you are human like the rest of us and have learned as you have aged.
I have to admit that I thought differently when I was younger but have learned with time although I still stray from time to time and have to remind myself to be safe.

Maine is one of those states. The license is revoked for one year and insurance goes up into the stratosphere after that. Definitely not worth it.

If you were going uphill it would have been 35 in a 55.

Get an attorney, pay the attorney, pay the court (twice as much). No points and no increase in insurance. It's worth it in the long run.

What are you 17 now?

I couldn't stop laughing about the "don't speed". You're too funny!

I had one at 149 on a bike and one at "in excess of 130" (the officer said his car wouldn't go any faster than that). Those were both back in the 55 max. years.

I find it unsafe to continuosly look at the speedo, so I go at the speed I feel comfy with.

I save the fast speeds for the track where it is safe.

The fact is that you really don't save a significant amount of time by riding that fast. Try doing your own tests. Do the same route twice, once taking all those risks and once riding within the limit or close to it. You might be surprised at the result.
This is completely false, except over short distances. I used to routinely drive 8+ hour trips, and you can easily knock off an hour or more of travel time just by doing 10 over the speed limit.

Back to motorcycles, and how to not speed on them. Well, you can't not speed! Unless you're constantly watching the speedo (which would be extremely dangerous) you will constantly be speeding at least a little.

Does anyone else feel like your going much slower than your real speed on the bike? For some reason I feel like I am going much slower on my bike than my car when going the same speed. I constantly find my self going well over the speed limit when I check my speedo. I drive a Ford Focus btw.

I speed in the cage a lot, but with the bike i feel like im more likely to get pulled over if im even 1 mph over, but sometimes that doesnt stop me. I have a clean driving record so far (:
