First bike.
Hey I'm new to owning a motorcycle, first bike got a used 03 ninja 250r. Bought it for 1200 with 16k miles, a little scratched on the mirrors and under fairing but overall great condition.
Just purchased some tune-up items today, spark plugs uni air filter, ignition coils, battery, oil/ oil filter and seafoam. The guy who owned it before me had it sitting for some time and I'm sure it is in need of a system flush. Tires are dry rotted from the heat here, buying them next once I get the bike running and idling good. It started up but just had a rough idle. |

Welcome! Your MC looks to be in good condition. My current bike isn't yellow, but the more that I see it, the more it is growing on me. Keep us posted on your progress, and don't hesitate to ask questions. We are all here to help one another.
Ninja250faq has lots of information and how to advice. I also like to watch youTube videos by Delboy's Garage. He really is methodical.

Thanks everyone. I was cleaning my bike and getting ready to do my tune up and noticed a couple things disconnected, so I'm hoping it didn't hurt the bike while I was checking it out and it was running. There was a hose from the engine to the carb and two connectors I can't figure out where they go. I found out where the hose went just not these connectors, are they extra?

Don't worry. Those two plugs don't connect to anything.

Welcome! You will find that questions get answered pretty quickly here.
Good call on the tire replacement, that was going to be my second suggestion. Because you said this was your first bike, my first suggestion would be to enroll in a MSF Basic Rider Course if you haven't already. That will make sure you get started riding with proper technique. I would also suggest that you purchase an entire set of gear - helmet, jacket, pants, boots, gloves - and wear all of it all the time. You may want mesh gear in your area, but gear is very important no matter what the temp. Check out CL for used gear. I've picked up some quality used gear for cheap over the years. This is a link to the technical section with a ton of good info - https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Ninja250_Howto Best of luck. Have fun with your new sport! |

You will need to oil the filter with air filter oil before installing it. Not too much, or it will effectively "choke" the engine.
The plugs you pictured are hotter than the standard plugs. The standard plug is a NGK CR8HSA (https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Changi...rands_to_avoid). Lower numbers are hotter for NGK. Have you taken a riding course? |

Why 4 spark plugs? You only need 2.

So I just did my tune up today and it started right up. Was a little high on idle at first, let I run for 5 minutes or so turned it off and let it sit for 15 made sure oil was topped off re started it for about another 5-7 minutes and it idled down to about 2 and sounded like it was running a better then when I first bought it. The coils I bought were too small/ bolt holes. Old ones are fine going to get my money back.

Yeah uni is the oil company not to oil their products. (Good name brand company).
K&n sometimes comes oiled or not. I bought the spray oil which was the only one available, first time oiling a filter but I followed the instructions as best I could. |

Thank you guys. I noticed no one advised me to adjust my valves, I read that every 6k miles to adjust them. That's like every other oil change.

Rode the bike today, felt great, think the valves are off. It idled fine but if I revved it it would get stuck at 3k rpms then eventually climb back down.

I'm going to have to look and see if I can find it. Do these have a normal hose that might break/get old and crumble.

Ok guys and gals. I took all the fairings and gas tank off, checked every line/hose and couldn't find any cracks or holes or anything loose. Didn't have carb cleaner so I couldn't spray around. I noticed the vent hose next to the fuel switch, I believe it was the vent hose and it was kinked really bad and probably let no air flow through it.
Also a hose at the bottom of the carb to the engine (one skinny end and one fat end) was really dirty and loose. Cleaned and sprayed brake cleaner through it. Put it back together and the bike started right up no problems except my speedometer and tach didn't move at first. |
