Lane Splitting at Tijuana's US/Mexico Border

Last week I rode the bike from LA To Cabo San Lucas and back. This is the part where I was crossing the border at Tijuana back into the US. According to some website, the wait time that day for cars was 3 hours, it took me about 20 minutes on the bike.

That looks like fun waiting in a car through that. You passed by a million cars. Lots of street vendors too. Interesting video.

Bravo! that was an entertaining watch, i've never experienced such volume in traffic to even attempt that. I found myself thinking, ''i'd take that right and go inbetween those cars'' and thats exactly what you did lol

Don't forget that lane splitting is legal and somewhat regular there. Adjusting your mirrors 20 times a day isn't fun. There is more than enough room with the mirrors for all but the tightest squeezes. I knocked my mirror once and lane-split countless times.

psh, who even needs mirrors. The only thing I ever use mine for is to make sure cops aren't following me without looking suspicious by turning around. I turn around to check for just about everything else. Guarantees no blind spots on the highway and it can be done very quickly. Just remember to take the hand that's on the side you're looking off the bar so you don't subconsciously pull it. Which really means look over your left shoulder 90% of the time.

Thanks for bumping that.

I want to go to Mexico at some point and keep thinking the traffic at the border will be insane and to plan enough time. The idea of splitting is so foreign to the way I ride, it never evens occurs to me that it would be possible.

It's interesting how the environment you learn to ride in can shape the way you ride. I live in an area where there are a ton of motorcycles, and I can lane split. Most people don't get angry with me about it, either. I just wave hi and they smile and return it.

not saying you do it every time but when there is crazy tight stretch of splitting for several miles solid why not?

It's not legal here, but I will do it if traffic is pretty much stopped and backed up

I read your sentence 3 times, but failed to find any meaning in it.

Edit: maybe you thought my achievements were for you? They are for the rider in the video that rode too fast, target fixated and then lost his trainers on impact.

I think that it's referring to the fact that the rider with the camera watched the wreck, then just left the scene.

The sentence would be from the wrecked rider's viewpoint "What great friends I've got. No no, just keep on riding dude. I'm good!"

At least that's how I read it.

However, I am thinking the one behind is not with the one who wrecked. Just happened to catch up to him and started filming the idiocy, then left the wreck to not be anywhere near it.

I think he meant the guy in the video that wrecked had great friends because the other guy filming the video who presumably was a friend of the guy who wrecked just kept going and didn't stop to check if the guy who wrecked was OK.

Edit: Nevadawolf beat my slow network connection to the punch. LOL

It looks like the rider in Mexico had to more problems avoiding the "human traffic" than the cagers.

No, because the one behind was illegally lanesplitting also. That's the I-285 perimeter around Atlanta. It probably needs legal lanesplitting more than most any other place in the U.S., but it is 100% illegal there and no drivers are expecting it. That driver checked and the lane was clear, so no fault there. If lanesplitting ever becomes legal outside CA there will be serious growing pains as drivers learn to look for lanesplitters.
