Adjusting clutch.

So I have watched a few tutorials on YouTube on how to get your clutch to engage closer to the handle bars. I have small hands and I have found out I stall out a lot becAuse after about half way up my hand it mostly extended and I just let go of the clutch because to me It feels like the top of the clutch.
My question is is it safe to do this on your own? I asked my mechanic friend and he said adjusting it won't fix the problem I would need to buy adjustable levers. But those are 100 bucks! Looking for a cheap way out here.

Your friend is mostly right. That adjustment is for the cable and not really intended to adjust the lever for personal preference but sometimes it's "close enough".

If you are after adjustable levers that are decent, have a look for "the2wheels" levers on ebay. I have been riding with those for a long time now. Many members here have them (or very similar) and have experienced some fading. I got the silver ones and mine have not, but I keep my bike in the garage too so ymmv.

There is another member here who has a friend's shop that sells similar levers that are considerably less than a big face.

Check eBay, that's where I got mine,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/271847513274...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I have these on both my Ninjette and EX500, good value, and they work.

PSA: Please be very careful when installing new levers. An improper brake lever install can lead to a VERY unpleasant riding experience.

Of course it's safe, but "safe" is relative to your hand's ability to grip the lever. Shorties are preferred by riders who brake with 2 fingers (which is a skill). If you prefer full length ones, they have those too at a very similar cost.

Oh! And if you attempt the lever install yourself. Be mindful that the clutch perch bolt is SUPER easy to strip out. So don't over tighten it too much or that will be the next part you're looking for.

Changing levers is a very easy job, should only take you about 5 mins per. Just triple check your brake side to make sure it's right, and then check it again.

Thank you! I planned on taking it to my friend to have him do it, but I might attempt to do it on my own and hope for no epic fails. I replaced my own turn signal when I broke it off on accident. I hope this can be just as simple

Just follow one of the MANY tutorials on YouTube. Seriously should take a total of 5 mins. The brake lever can be done in about 30 seconds. The clutch lever takes only a couple of mins.

All you need is a 10mm socket. Loosen and remove the nuts on the bottom first, then loosen and remove the the bolt on top.

If you find it difficult to get access to the bottom nut, just loosen the nut that compresses the assembly to the bar and then rotate the assembly.

Be careful on the clutch lever and do not break the the sensor post that's made of plastic.

Also, get the cheap ones from eBay, should run you about $20 and about 10 days to deliver from China. 99% of the levers you find on eBay are all the same Chinese ones.

My question was specific to my hand size vs just asking about lever adjustment. If you don't like my question you can just move on.

If your hands are weak, then maybe shorty levels won't be good, due to most of us whom have shorty use 2 fingers, which is what there made for mostly. You could play it safe and just get the standard size. Worst case scenario is you can buy the shorty ones later once your more confident, and build up those muscles. Yes your hand muscles will be better, along with your core.

I was reading on other website someone with hads as small as me (xs gloves in women's or a large in kids) can fit their entire hand on short levers. Their pinky is on the end of the lever.

Shorty vs full size is an ergonomics/skill choice that only you can make. Using all 4 fingers on a short lever is fine as long as it doesn't compromise being tight on the bars, hand and wrist comfort and so on. Replacing the stock levers should be an 100% improvement to rideability, and not take away from another aspect just to get them.

@cadd - I clicked the link, no results?!?!?!?

I've heard the same thing, if you need measurements of mine, let me know.
