Hello everyone. Where to...
Hello everyone,
I'm a new member and a new rider... well not just yet. I am planning to buy a Ninja 250R soon. I just received my certification from AMO. The teacher from the class told me there are certain dealerships you can go to in order to see the deals of the shop and use the discount from AMO or MSF. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find any information about this, like any websites? I'm planning to buy gear also (I'm looking for the gear first) and I plan to use my discount to see if it actually helps out alot. My helmet size is medium, but I can't really trust buying helmets online because people told me helmets may be different for all people. During the MSF course, I was using a Scorpion brand helmet and it was pretty comfortable. But, I plan on buying a Shoei or Icon brand helmets? Any recommendations would help . Thank you, OgreEddy |

Well hey there, welcome man!!! It may be different in various states, but the only slight discount I got using the MSF card was a little deduction in cost in insurance.
As for gear and all, it's a matter of what you like, the level of protection, looks and what your budget is looking like. I started off with a basic yet protective textile jacket, they are cheaper than leather, they breath well, but they don't protect as well as leather. They will still hold up in case of an accident though. I also went with a cheaper helmet, like HJC, Scorpion, etc., but if you can afford the Shoei off hand, go for it. Gloves are another important thing you must have. I'd recommend a full gauntlet style over the shorties, because of wrist and abrasion protection. I prefer leather, from Icon, Teknic, or Alpinestars, all are good brands, but it's up to the look and money. Take a look through the Gear Related section, and you'll find tons of threads of info. As for most gear, go to a dealer or a store and try on the stuff before you actually buy it. It'll save you a lot of time and money...trust me, I found out the hard way Again, welcome!! |

I'm at the Los Angeles area . Well, I'm planning to spend a decent amount on a helmet because that's what everyone recommends. Look is not an option for me, I just need the most affordable and safest . Does anyone know if I can get any discount on gear with the MSF card ?
Thanks |

You wont get a gear discount with the MSF card and the discount you'll get on a NEW bike is not worth it. Best to buy a used 250 from craigslist.
Between Icon and Shoei... get a Shoei. I had an Icon Airframe and loved it, but the thing was definitely a boulder (see: heavy). Shoeis aren't as heavy, fit well, have a great field of vision, and vent wonderfully. What part of LA are you in? I'm in the beach cities area, if you're near by I can help you out. |

Thanks Trailer. So the MSF card does not provide any discount at all for motorcycle gears ... And I am in the heart of LA (Downtown).

Do you have any motorcycle gear stores nearby? I go to school up in Hollywood so I could possibly roll through when im off of school and give you some pointers on gear if you need it. If you find a used bike you want to look at but don't know what to look for PM me and I'll let you know if I'll be able to come help you out.

Welcome OgreEddy! Definitely buy a helmet you can try on in person. If your funds are limited, I'd look at sales of a new full-face coverage helmet with the latest DOT certification. One of the major motorcycle magazines ( Motorcyclist? ) did a great story a few years ago in conjunction with helmet safety guru Dr. Harry Hurt. It concluded that the much more expensive Snell certified helmets allowed more force to be transmitted to the head in simulated crashes than cheaper DOT cert only helmets. Absolutely no correlation between price paid and the protection rendered.
If its your first MC , I definitely recommend looking at lightly used MCs. good luck and ride safe. |
