New to me dirt bike, cr 5 hunnie
After quite some time of being on the hunt everything finally fell into place and i was able to pick up my first cr500 dirt bike 6hr round trip well worth it
It's a 91, it pretty good shape all around, engine is in great shape which is the main thing for these bikes, needs some cosmetic tlc among a few odds and ends and she will be all ready for me to race some post vintage XC races and hare scrambles I wanted a 91-94 so i could enter it in the post vintage races so it is pretty much exactly what i was looking for and the right price ta boot Didn't get much of a chance to ride it yet, just around the yard a few times and probably wont really get a good chance until March or so at the earliest. The front forks need completely gone through/rebuilt but other than that it doesn't need much to be a solid runner My 2 stroke collection is starting to round out quite nicely, now i just need to pick up a 125 crappy phone pics all i got right now, bike is already half way apart so probably no glamor shots for a while. On another note, i now have 2 full sized running dirt bikes, so anyone who thinks they can handle the yz250 and wants to take a trip and go for a rip hit me up, if you do well on the yz maybe you can hop on the cr

If you were closer I'd love to take out my 250 and have some fun with you, but I'm not planning on driving that far when redbud is only 45 minutes away from me.

Oh snap... Hey Ryan you know of any good trail riding around the Indianapolis area? I could meet you halfway, I can be there in 1.5 hours. I just need a reason.

I know there is a gncc harescramble track/ ama motocross track in crawfordsville. I have never been to it though. I'm sure there is something a little closer to Indy. I would love to meet up. It would be fun.

I believe the reason is a CR500, it's like riding a MotoGP bike in the dirt! I'd love to ride it but I'd be twice as fast on the YZ250. However; I have always liked to ride things faster than needed.

Most people who don't have much experience on MX bikes would be faster on a 250f or a 125, I have never ridden a 500, but my main bike is a Enduro that I revalved the suspension for mx, because I love the torquey motor, and I am pretty sure I'd love a five hunnit.

I've never ridden a five hunnit, but I've heard the powervalved kx is a much better motor than the cr500.

^ From what I understand they are both fairly bullet proof and solid motors but obviously the power valve system on the kx's will net more bottom end and a smoother transition onto the pipe. I think the kx's were more popular with the desert type racers vs the cr's any many titles were won
I have heard that the kx's vibrate more than the cr's, can't remember why though? When I was on the hunt I was looking for both, my only criteria was price and year. I wanted something in the 89-94 year range. Seen lots of great looking kx's and almost always at better prices than the cr's (cult following type thing I guess) but never the right year or the price and distance was just not that appealing. I kind of wanted the kx for the PVS but with the cr it is nice to have one less thing to worry about

^ I love 125 2t's
they are kind of like the ninja, just beg to be pinned WOT I want to get another one, but then again the ktm 150's are very enticing, all the fun of a 125 but with that little extra kick in the pants

I had the 1984 CR500. It was the last air cooled one. Vibrated and hard to start. But wow what a blast. I raced that and a CR125 one season. What a difference racing both of those in a day. The next year i raced a CR250. A great bike. I wish I still had all three. And a KTM 150.

I have heard rumors for a few years now but looks like the State is finally going to take action at cleaning up one of my favorite off road playgrounds. http://www.tribdem.com/news/m-projec...8112122d7.html Perhaps I am being selfish here but where I am supposed to ride my dirt bikes now? They are going to ruin all the trails and hill climbs I have put in here over the years Joking aside, it will be great for them to finally clean this place up unfortunately it is 40+ years over due. Had a lot of fun at this place growing up dicking around with my friends... but seriously, where I am supposed to ride my bike now Hopefully I have a least a month or 2 before they really start going to town on this project, there are still a few big hill climbs I need to check off my list, and am hoping the 500 can help out with that. The one in the main pictures has never been climbed to my knowledge, next to no run at it, but I might see if I can give it a go before it is gone. Another one of similar steepness and size up the valley, it's wicked steep at the top, it will go though of course vid or it didn't happen

You could always take it to an MX track.. .
Or maybe a little more in your field, there should be some harescrambles hosted fairly locally, and if you have the endurance they are quite fun.

But yeah, definitely hitting up some hare scrambles this year for sure they are a lot of fun, should be interesting on the 500 but the xc/hare scrambles I am looking at this year for the 500 are with the North Atlantic AHRMA so they are short races only like an hour + a lap so should not beat me up. But losing this place to ride does kind of stink, it had some uniqueness about it that I won't find anywhere else. After they are done reclaiming it, it will be ripe for some new trails just no more slate hill climbs which I really like.

no new pictures, ill snag some soon, bike is pretty much completely apart less the bottom end is still in the frame
Glad I got this bike on the cheap because it needed everything and even then after cost of purchase and $ into parts I'm going to be pretty deep into this bike but it will be worth it. So basically every bearing outside of the engine needed replaced, I have worked through the wheels, the linkage, steering stem and have the swing arm bearings left to finish. Finally got around to taking the clutch cover off and the basket is shot, grooved beyond use, needs replaced, same goes for hub and pressure plate.... I guess In short the entire clutch needs replaced which sucks, I was hoping to get a season out of the engine before throwing any serious cash at it. Was able to shave the plastic on the fuel tank and air box to get it looking better and cleaner which is sweet. got the front forks completely rebuilt and revalved, got lucky and saved some cash as the springs in the forks were perfect for my weight and riding and they were in great shape. The reeds are chipping and need replaced, I might just spring for an after market setup at this point, probably vforce Before I discovered the state of the clutch I figured I would have the bike back together running by the end of the month, not so sure now. need to sell some crap I have laying around to make some coin to cover some of the costs of a new clutch. There are some other odds and ends that need attention but things I can let go for the season, this was supposed to be a budget bike, things add up quick Well at least the bike will be in good shape when all is said and done, I won't have too much work to do next year on it

I would personally reccomend you go with a boyseen reed valve. They seem to be a little broader than v-force reed valves (have a broader powerband). If you go with just reeds, I would go OEM. For a 125 or 250 you wanted a stronger hit up top I would reccomend boy seen power reeds or a reed valve.

^ yeah, need to do a little reading on what riders prefer in the 500, the boyesen or the vforce. I have a vforce3 in my yz250 and I love it, but the 500 is a different animal.

Dear Diary...
Still not done, despite having the funds a few different times, but then something else comes up and I need to be an adult. Still in same boat for getting finished, need to finish linkage bearings, swingarm bearings, and the clutch. That is it. Not sure when that will get done unfortunately so I decided to just strip the frame now and paint the frame. I know some people that have a paint job at a factory near by, might see if they can blast it and paint it for me. That would be nice, if not I will just rattle can it to get me through a season or 2 before I can powdercoat it. Was in a position to buy some parts again but I did some damage to my yz250 this Saturday and that is my primary bike so it needs addressed ASAP. Was riding in some big rocks and must have hit my front brake caliper off a boulder, a little down the "trail" (used lightly) I noticed my lever had no feel, glance down and I had no brake caliper Not sure how it came off with out me noticing anyway, this resulted in me needing a new, line, caliper, bracket and rotor for the yz, at least my fork mounts were good the slow rebuild game continues...

finally getting things back together and it's starting to look like something. Cutting it close, need this bike for a race this coming weekend
main holds ups... getting steering stop welded, my organization system when I stripped it lost a few spacer/collars for the linkage and I didn't make sure the oem throttle cable was going to work with the new carb I got for it... it doesn't Should get a few parts in the mail today and finish most of it up, then waiting on a throttle cable. Will be mostly where I want it to be mechanically, in the long run I will get some more new plastics for it and graphics to sharpen it up.

Everything back from the shops and ready for a fresh top end.
Cylinder to next overbore and got a decompression valve installed into the head and some shots of what a 500 piston looks like next to a yz250 and rz350 piston. The rz piston is quite large for the cc of the bike considering it is a twin. That is because it has a short stroke, most 2 strokes have a fairly "square" bore to stroke. The rz350 does not, part of the reason why it has lots of room for performance gains.
