Changing sprockets?
Hey guys, I ordered a 47t rear sprocket (up from the 45t OEM rear.)
Also ordered a replacement 14t OEM sized front sprocket and chain to complete the job.. The guy I ordered the sprocket sold me on upping the rear to 2 more teeth for a little more midrange 20-50mph pep. Is this going to be a noticeable difference? The bike is obviously only making 39.2whp, so it's never really going to be a 'fast' machine, but am I going to notice a difference after I install these? Any experience? |

The bike isn't making 39.2whp (I assume you mean whp = wheel horsepower). It's making closer to 26 hp stock, and nudging 30 if it has all of the typical mods on it and is relatively well tuned.
That said, many people with 250's like to move the gearing in the other direction; slightly taller for better high speed comfort. I think @csmith12 is still doing trackdays with a 15/41 setup, which is significantly taller than stock. Going the other direction to a 14/47 isn't as common a mod, and probably won't help performance in a way to make up for the higher freeway revs. http://www.ninjette.org/wiki/Should_...ocket_sizes%3F

I ran 14/47 for a year. Loved it for roll-ons and short/tight turns. Hated it for anything over 50 mph for extended time.

If you love constant shifting and a screaming motor, go for it.
For me, not so much |

Hmmm.... try it, it's cheap enough. Take it off/resell if you don't like it, simple change. While it's true that most street riders go the other way when it comes to gearing. There isn't any risk in mixing it up a little. I have never been to Maui but the loop seems tight enough to enjoy the gearing. It's gunna rev a bit higher, have you shifting gears a bit more often and as Alex and Chone said, freeways might suck for long periods of time.
Don't expect 2 teeth to give you that much extra torque and expect to sacrifice what you gained from the top end. But give it a go and be sure to tell us what you think.
