Fall down go boom.
For the first ride of the year, I headed up Mt. Hamilton with a local group. @rojoracing53 and @Jiggles joined me as well. It was going to be a pretty chilly day, so I wimped out and took the BMW instead of the ninjette.
Conditions were a little sketchy as we were climbing the mountain, with quite a bit of gravel, and a few memorable patches of ice and frost. But - I made it through all of that before throwing myself off the bike on the back side of the mountain. I lost the rear under power in gravel, and it looks like I highsided myself up and over the bike, and quite soon after into the pavement. Some friends took good care of me and the bike, and managed to get in touch with Annie. Looking at my helmet, I dinged myself pretty good, but if I was out I wasn't for long, as I was alert when someone got to me on the road and asked if I could wiggle off of it. Was in the ER for much of yesterday afternoon/evening, and the good news is that time and rest will likely heal all. A whole bunch of x-rays later, no noticeable rib, back, or neck fractures, even though all of those areas were both painful, stiff, and sore. I tweaked my right thumb, so it is in an open cast for awhile to keep it immobile while the ligaments heal. A few scrapes elsewhere, my left shoulder hit the ground hard and ground through the jacket, its pad, my gerbing jacket liner, and a thick tshirt underneath to scrub off some skin. I'd estimate I hit the ground between 50 mph and 60 mph, but was very fortunate to not hit any other object in the road other than the pavement itself. Also fortunate to not go off the road, as the embankment could have made it a more serious event. Have been on happy pills since the ER, and will likely be on them for the near future, as everything is still pretty painful. Kicking myself for not taking the 300 for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that fixing the K1600GT back up isn't going to a be quick or inexpensive process, and this is the time I should be using to get that bike ready for the Iron Butt rally, rather than fixing crash damage. I had the Hero3 running throughout the day, and have viewed all the videos. I will post up all vids of the day up until the excitement, but won't plan to share that part until potentially after all events are sorted (bike insurance, health insurance, etc.). But - it does once again prove that the best way to crash a bike is to slap a camera on it.

WOW!!! Not a good way to ring in 2013, hopefully it isn't a sign of things to come. You'll be real sore for quite a while, but you're very fortunate not to have been injured a lot worse. Keep the happy pills into ya and I hope you heal up fully and quickly!!

It's always good to crash on the first of the year. If you get it out of the way on the first you can have the rest of the year crash free.
P.S. I do not agree with this statement at all, it is for the people who think that everyone is going to crash. P.P.S.S. I made it though a day of stunting squids riding out of my comfort zone. It was the first ride I though I shouldn't be with this group (before the ride). They were actually a great bunch, but kids.

Someone almost tossed that BMW emblem but I figured you'd want to save it as a crash monento so I saved it
Axle's knows if your going to crash go big or go home, so he mounted up his GoPro then high sided himself to the moon on the biggest heaviest bike in the group while power sliding throw the gravel trap Good to hear its only money and rest and let me know about your needed iron butt rally mods. I have zero experience in that field of mods but then I had zero experience with most the mods I've done to the ninja. Heal up quick so we can go do it again |

Yikes, looks pretty serious. Glad you were geared up and glad it wasn't worse. While it sucks to wreck the expensive bike, it also sucks to wreck your brand new bike, so at least you avoided that. What can I say, I'm a glass half full kinda' guy.
Take care buddy. Pretty soon it will just be a war story. |

Yes, it has TCS. I've found that it works quite well, but it's not foolproof. I think I've become so confident in it that I tend to not worry about the throttle at all on that bike, and it came back to bite me. When it lost grip on the rear in the gravel, the bike was leaned over a bit. Not much, but a bit. So it spun up so quickly, and got the bike out of shape so quickly, that even if the TCS kicked in, it was evidently too late to rein things back in with the limited traction already.

But it doesn't have to change behavior. The vast majority of the bikes I've owned don't have TCS or ABS, and I get along fine with them as well. There have been the occasional scares when crossing over a double yellow or other paint line while accelerating and having the bike unintentionally spin up, where I wish there was TCS in place to at least try and moderate it. Happened quite a bit on the RT, which was quite a torquey beast. I've spun up the rear on the K16 a number of times in a straight line, and it still behaves well. What bit me here was a combination of lean angle, gravel, and acceleration. Take away any one of those, and we'd still be discussing the finer points of root beer floats at the Junction.

definitely keep that BMW emblem. Frame it. And keep that photo of the helmet handy to show to noobs. It's textbook... why we should AGTATT and why Wilfred Brimley says full-face helmets are the right thing to do. |
