Scam?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to sell my 250 right now and I have a person who said they are interested but they are wanting to pay via paypal and have someone come pick it up. He says that he has an "agent" that would pick up everything since he is in the marines. here's a text he sent after I asked if he would not be available to pick it up.
Don't worry about the pick up, delivery and also the testing. I have an agent here that will take care of that. With the issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the pick up agent so you don't have to worry about that. I would be able to make payment via paypal, I find it the easiest way to use my credit card safely and paypal is a safe way to do this. What should I do? Would love some help. |

Yep, and the whole "I'm in the marines" thing makes you feel obliged to trust him due to the inherent respect and trust Americans place in their veterans, and the plausibility of the story, and how you wouldn't dream of impersonating a veteran for personal gains.
It's much more effective the scammers have found out then using the "I am an African prince in exile!" or "I am a lawyer dealing with a forgotten relatives will" |

Tell him ok, you'll do it. Then give him the wrong address. Waste his time and money

Out of amusement, I responded to a couple of the oil rig/overseas/etc paypal scams.
What usually happens: Them: "Hi! I wnt 2 give u mony now. English bad. Overseas" Me: "Sounds awesome, (asks for details)" Them: "I give $500 over asking price. You ship to me. What's your paypal?" Me: "Awesome, how do we pay?" Them: "Paypal. (Insert reassuring bad grammar and how paypal covers any scams. (Insert tons more pressuring about using paypal and giving them your account email" Me: "Gives account email" Me: Receive scam paypal needing Western Union wire transfer for shipping charges before they wire me the full payment. Me: "Luls, no. GTFO" |

And usually Western Union will be mixed in somehow. A lot of times they just want you to send them their "change" via western union. Then there is the fake cashiers check for twice the asking price from Nigeria scam. And the give me your bank account numbers so I can hide a gazillion dollars in your account and you keep 10% scam. I had one that was selling a pair of jet skis on craigs list for about a fourth what they were worth. Basically, he said they were in some other state, but that he would pay for shipping. When I said I'd drive to the other state to pick them up, he said that "ebay's item excrow" service had them and that I would not be allowed to look at the them or pick them up in person. I knew it was a scam at that point, but I played along. Eventually, he sent me a name of a guy in the UK to wire the money to. I contacted both the UK police and western union's fraud dept and they apparently got the guy.

Hell, those scumbags even pull those scams with apartment/house rentals. Was really annoying when I needed to find housing in a rush.
