By the way, BIG THANKS to Panda for putting this together and taking the time and effort to try to make sure everyone was accounted for. It's like herding cats, I know.....

Glad everyone could make it! I know it was a long ride for some coming from CT and Central NJ. Thanks for showing up!

an idea

here's an idea for those who want to ride sometime again and hit some nice roads. i did this with a bunch of buell owners, roads vary but it is fun, especially up and down a mountain with a very sharp U-turn at the end.

http://grouprider.com/view_route.php...5&road_id=5185

maybe this weekend weather and work permitting.

Tom....the down mountain road wuth the haripin...I think...is a few miles west of new paltz......they climb the cliffs there. If ANY of you guys wants to do the catskills I would go. I know the area around the reservoirs very well and new paltz is on the way back . It's too much trouble to make a path but the ride is like this:
apprx 155 miles up on 17 (only way to get there fast) maybe 30-40 miles around the reservoirs on rt 30 whuch can be picked up near Livingston Manor. Back thru Oilvera valley, take 52 back to new paltz.. If you went around reservoirs with the Buell guys....you were on 30. Been up there a half dozen times and it's 340-410 day depending on the route.
Hey...I'll go saturday if you and Dan want to go.

Oh...OK...if you want company I'd go.
Dont know how you plan to get there but I have a very nice route thru NJ
( as opposed to Taco-84-97). IF I recall right....there's also a cast iron viaduct built by roebling ( as in Brooklyn Bridge) that is an incredible structure ( it was a bridge for boats). Just FYI....hawks nest is heavily enforced during the summer...some guys got killed there last year so...y'know, the sheriff is out most of the time.

There was a motorcycle fatality this past weekend. A guy crossed a double yellow passing a car and didn't make it. If I go I'm planning on going down to New Hope and then following the Del river north.

Let me know if you guys go, New Hope is my normal weekend ride. We'ed love to tag along if you want the company. By "we" i refer to myself Al and my BF Shawn... I'm hesitant to ride with John again.... Is that bad? I can let him know if you guys want though. Probably wouldn't go all they way up to NY but there may be a good place along the way for us to peel off.

I dont think its bad. Part of riding, if you like riding with other people is to find a good group. Some like to go all out all the time, some stunt, some just cruise. Ive got a couple friends I'll ride with, we do a decent pace but were not out to set best times.

Ok, i do like hanging with him. He's a cool guy, just made me a bit uncomfortable when he was behind me. I'll just let him go first

My best guess is he probably doesn't even know that it is an issue. You might want to just mention it to him. I agree that he doesn't provide enough of a cushion between riders in case the unexpected happens.

I will, i didn't have a chance to talk to him after the ride. I'll give him a copy of "MSF’s Guide to Group Riding".

OK...John Jet....I can see how having him behind you would be stressful. Prob got a good 1/2 mile ahead of me on 301. Let him go first and tell him to wait at Easton....simple ?
611 usually has too much traffic for anyone to get way ahead unless you can pass them...which we cant on the ninjettes....
New hope to Hawks next is a pleasant ride., relaxing

That might be my bad in the group ride - I was right behind him sometimes...

I almost wiped out on one corner with him - the one that dropped down going right - thankfully no cars were coming or else we would've been toast.

Google "Hawk's Nest" and "New York State Route 97" and you'll get it.

I've never been there but the route must be easy as pie to follow. You just ride from Port Jervis 70 miles up 97 to Hancock NY. No turns, no towns in between… no way to really get lost.

Re John… The MSF guide is useful but my sense is that it isn't his style to read and absorb a rulebook. Perhaps a gentle reminder that group rides are not races is more in order. He even made reference to "winning the race" vs. me at one point when we both went ahead of the group.

The guy just likes to ride fast. Nothing wrong with that (other than the high probability that he'll get caught one day). If he wants to ride faster than everyone else, that's cool… but that means he'll be riding his own ride, not with the group. Kind of kills the point of a group ride.

He'll either get frustrated having to constantly stop and wait or will figure out that group rides are not about going fast. Or he'll find a bunch of riders just like him to hang with.

I used to run into this kind of thing all the time on group bicycle rides. The fast people were always frustrated, feeling held back and having to wait all the time, and the slow people were always frustrated, feeling like everyone was running away from them.

Larger bicycle clubs solve this problem by categorizing rides according to average speed. If you can't keep up, don't go on a fast ride. You will get dropped. Most motorcycle meetups aren't big enough for that.

This!

And also I just got a new rear tires delivered that I should get installed before I go on any long rides. I'm down to my wear bars on both bikes.

If I can get them installed by Saturday I'll go.

W to Spring Gardens St becomes Riegelsville Milford Rd.
To Old River Rd N,W
Ends at E turn…back to Riegelsville Milford Rd. N
To triangle,
W on Warren Glenn to River Rd N
Continue River Rd bear left to continue N
Becomes Carpentersville Rd
Bear left, continue N
Go NW onto S. Main St (Phillipsburg-122)
Becomes N Main, becomes Broad
Turn E on 4th st to N Main/ River Rd
Follow around fields
Continue NE of River Rd
E on Hutchinson
N onto S Foul Rift Rd
Bear W….bear N towards Belvedere on Phillipsburg-Greenwich- Belvedere street
BELVEDERE town….
W on Water St over bridge
N on PA 806
E on River Rd intersect (PA 611)
DELAWARE WATER GAP
Cross bridge 80, first exit right…U turn onto Old Mine Rd
Continue N

Will we hit 46 at some point?

T : I have no clue if we'll hit 46 but we will hit 80. If you want to take the time...goog earth lambertville and quickly follow the roads north on the delaware....really...we're running parallel to the PA route with a lot more little turns and stuff. I would guess that from lambertville....we should hit easton PA IN ABOUT 45 MINUTES (78-287)////Del Gap (80) maybe an hour after that but i dont know for sure...we will get slightly lost but...i'll figure it out.
Easton is maybe 30 miles north of lambertville
del gap....another 30 miles
Port Jerv...another 35 + miles.
I dont know these roads so it'll be slower than I think probably. Really T...if you want to be back by a definite time you might not enjoy this. Or...just jump off at Easton....78e to 287....or jump off at del water gap....80 east ( does 80 hit 46?) I DO NOT see this as being a fast ride as I will have to pay attention to my route.

No set time to be back. 31 between 46 and home is a nice ride is all.
We'll see what tomorrow looks like!

What time do you plan on hitting Port Jervis?

I might be able to make it, but probably not.

I know that there's a Mobil station at the corner of US6 and US209, which is right at the start of the route up to Hawks Nest… perfect meeting spot.

The most sensible way for me to get to this ride is to go straight to Port Jervis via I-84

We dont need no compass...we got the sun, If teri bails in the a.m. or it's actually raining....I dunno....The part I want to check out is north of 80 so I may begin the ride there...totally unfamiliar with area.
