air filter with 12k miles on it, look see
had to share my embarrassment. '09 with nearly 12k miles. i looked at the filter when i did the valves ~7k miles, looked fine at the time. but this is probably why the bike felt restricted at high rpm.
anyone want to chime in as to the rust? from the arrestor side? should i be getting that out/ replaced? |

The rust is from six years worth of dust containing iron being stuck in the filter and exposure to moisture, temperature swings, and condensation.
You might want to consider replacing that filter. |

Since nothing major happened, I am more than happy to post up my idiocy so others learn what not to do. Some folks learn from others showing the right way to do things, others learn by watching morons do the wrong things. i learn by both methods so eh, I'll be the joker who does silly things with a bike if it helps someone to not do silly things.

A filter as dirty as that after 12k ?!?
Are you riding in a coal mine?!? I ride about 30k per year and have never seen a filter even 1/2 that dirty on a street bike! I clean mine about every 10k. My dirt bikes are another story! |

Unless your air filter is ripped there is no reason to replace it. Even if replacing it, do not forget to oil it with something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Uni-Foam-Filte.../dp/B0022ZL5DW If it's dirty, just wash it really well with dish detergent and oil it back up. If you don't have specific oil and are in a pinch (like needing to get to the auto parts store to buy foam air filter oil), spray some WD40 on the air filter and massage it thoroughly all the way through. I like to do this in a zip lock bag, keeps my hands from getting super oily.
