Tach/RPM gauge needle wobble

So, for a while now the tach's needle would get stuck at 0 rpm on colder mornings but then eventually jump up and be happy as a clam...

Now it holds a steady value except between 7K and 9K RPM, where it wobbles like on really old cars...

Anybody else experience or familiar with this before I go tearing into the instrument cluster to clean/re-graphite the bearings (if that's even possible)?

Not sure if that would even help. It's not a mechanical device; it's measuring electrical current.

If related to vibrations, it may indicate poor electrical connections between the instrument and the CDI.

ah, that's right, I forgot, it's a stepper motor behind the gauge, right?
