Safety wiring -- reference photos for noobs

Kayso, not Ninjette-specific, but maybe useful for reference for utter noobs who, if they're like me, can't ever get enough info.

Another track day virgin with the same bike I've got sent me a PM asking how I wired mine, so I documented it for him. Posting the photos here to help other clueless people like me. Comments from the peanut gallery welcome... I've never done this before.

Point of this post is to show some basics of safety wiring, what (I think) a decent and tidy job looks like, and how you go about finding a good place to wire to.

This would only apply to a 300, with its spin-on filter. Haven't seen one in the flesh so I don't know where you'd run the wire on that bike. On a newgen or earlier, I'd just drill both the oil filter bolt and the drain plug, and wire them to one another.

A basic item in safety wiring for those who don't know is that you need to wire the filter, which (unless it's a K&N) has nothing to attach the wire to. You put a hose clamp on it, and wire the clamp so that the filter can't loosen. that's what's shown here. The challenge is finding a place for the other end of the wire.

Bike is a 2011 (L1) GSX-R750. There's nothing really handy to wire the filter or drain plug to without making holes, so I drilled a couple of 1/16" holes in a tab located on the front edge of the oil pan.

This isn't the first location I tried. On my bike the oil cooler is located next to the filter and at first I ran the wire around its outlet pipe. But that was hard to get to and it resulted in a sloppy job. So the lesson here is "find someplace that you can get to easily."

All photos are shot looking up, with the front of the bike ("forward") towards the top of the photo. The twisted wire that's already there is the one I ran to the oil drain plug.

First photo shows just the hose clamp and tab with its drilled hole, for context. Second photo is a bit hard to figure out... what I'm showing here is the wire going through the hose clamp worm screw housing. then twist, thread, twist again, trim and curl the end.

Enjoy!

Looks good to me. Let me toss this out there for you next time you change your oil. Look for a filter that has a molded nut at the top, see example pic. Also notice it already has the safety wire hole already there ready for wire. It will save you from that clap you got wrapping your current filter.

Another tip, get some rubber hose/tubing of small diameter and preferably some that can take some heat. Anywhere the wire contacts a painted or polished surface, slide the wire through the tubing before you twist the other end.

The colored hose/tubing just looks plain cool too.

Yeah, got one on the shelf. When I bought the bike last year I picked up a couple of OEM filters. I think I have one more to use before I get to that K&N.

I'm using the tubing trick for my oil fill plug.
