Started riding 40 years ago. Started racing 39 years ago. Have held an AMA pro license in Motocross, Supercross and Road racing. Have raced(dirt) motocross, supercross, hare scrambles, enduro, flat track,(road) sprint and endurance. Have held a motorcycle license for 30 years and have over 300,000 road miles under my belt. That my resume.

I can tell you in no uncertain terms that to advocate to new and intermediate riders that the use of the rear brake is essentially a non-factor is an injustice which can and will get someone hurt or killed.

Having so much to teach young riders, you should not walk away from our site.

I use so much rear brake during my practices of Moto Gymkhana that my brake fluid boils.

On the speedway, however, I never use it but to start the weight transfer during an emergency stop.
It is not that is not effective, it is that the harder the stopping, the more dangerous and attention demanding it becomes, IMHO.

There are a lot of opinions here that fly directly in the face of logic, it annoys me too and ai see why you feel this way drac.

People advocate dickheads who profess to know what they're doing but don't, just try not let it get to you.

Some people seem to think the rear brake is put there to kill you, those are also the types to misuse it and end up killing themselves, just ignore them and rise above mate.

Btw: personally I wouldn't take advise from 99% of people here over a qualified instructor or a local mechanic but i realise some people are daft enough to, and **** them if they do and come off!

Everyone in this world will find people who disagree with their opinions. That's the nature of society. You help offer a different perspective that many others just don't have. To walk away just because of differing opinions is shortsighted. Everyone, not just you, needs to learn to accept differences and learn to understand. Arguing doesn't change others mind, time does.

Disagreements will always exist around the rear brake. Without fresh opinions like yours, what are new riders to do except listen to the only voice they hear? There are pros and cons to both theories. What someone chooses to believe is based in some merit of fact, its up to the consumer of those facts to decide how they want to proceed.

Stay and help provide the knowledge that you have, its beneficial to all in the long run.

This argument reminds me very much of global warming, you can show people as many stats as you like, you can argue that it's universally accepted in the scientific community to your hearts content, some people will just refuse to accept it, point out one weirdo who bases their credibility on charisma and bolt down.

It's the same with lots of things, their is no argument to be had, one is true the other is false yet people refuse to believe they're wrong.

Examples:

God, Crop Circles, 911 conspiracies, front brake only, The royal family are lizard people, drugging water supplies, iluminati.

I too almost quit coming to this site but my reason was because of a few A-HOLES who want to just argue anything anybody posts. I agree with you that NOT using the back brake is just plain stupid and dangerous BUT as stated above its an argument that has gone on forever. You at least are quitting because of the danger people are causing others but brakes aside, here is my advice to you and what made my visits to ninjette.org pleasant again....start an IGNORE LIST. I have about 5 members on mine (and growing). It has made visiting and reading post and posting post so much more pleasant and enjoyable.

I agree with @dfox who stated it perfectly. Stay and provide us with your opinion using your many years of experience. If not, all we will hear is the "opinions and advice" of young little bucks who think they know it all.

I agree that the combined use of both front and rear brakes certainly improves stopping distance over the use of front brake only...it's common sense that both tires slowing the bike will certainly outperform that of the front brake alone. But to leave ninjette.org due to a simple disagreement is a bit of a hasty move, don't you think? Regardless of your decision, continue riding safely and have fun out there.

Well its kinda basic riding knowledge isn't it? I mean why would they even have a rear brake if it wasn't meant to be used lol. I use the front only in straight lines and slight leans. Anything beyond that is controlled by engine and rear brakes which just a 'hint' of front brake for flavor.

Back breaks are very painful. Rear breaks even more so. I've had a crack in my rear for a long time. You get used to it.

Dude, the rear brake is there to be used. the proper effective way to use it varies with surface conditions, weather and lean angle.

Optimal usage are as per aeroblade standards*

Straight line braking - 60% front 40% rear
" "Sandy roads - Engine 20% engine braking and 80% rear
" "Wet conditions - 60% rear 40% front
Braking while in a curve - balancing engine braking and minimal use of rear brake.(or just take it slow)
Extremely muddy conditions - Stay at home

im bad at the rear brake. i wind up using the engine to slow the rear instead cause i am too sudden on the front and the rear bounces and then i blow up my engine.

The Earth's temperature fluctuates, that's a scientific fact. I'm pretty sure 30-40 years ago they were telling everyone to prepare for the next ice age. This global whining is just a ploy to make money off of the uneducated and ignorant. End of story.
