Motorcycle etiquette

If I'm riding alone and come to a traffic light/stop sign where there's another bike going the same direction, do I pull next to them or in behind? Also, if I catch up with another group of motorcycles do I line up with their stagger if that is how they are riding? If they are riding in a straight line, should I just do this too?

There is no set rule but.....

I wouldn't do any of those things unless invited, especially the side by side at stop light. They could fall into you.

I would maintain respectful distance behind as any other car would.

If they stop at the light, and they stopped off center to the left of the lane I view that as a invitation to pull up along side and chat. If they stop center of the lane...they probably dont know you are there or have no interest in saying hi.

As for a group in front of you, it depends on how close you are. If its city traffic, definitely stagger in the next position so you don't run up on someone in their group if they have to stop suddenly. Just keep in mind that the last rider in their group is probably the tail gunner so he will either block you or recognize you if you are behind them. If its on the interstate and they are a good ways in front of you, don't run up and try to join their group unless invited.

In general, you just have to read the rider. Most motorcyclists are friendly, and welcome other riders on the road. However, there are MC clubs who will not take too kindly to having any non-member approach them uninvited. So if its a patched MC member/s...dont even think about it. Keep your distance and leave them and their group alone.

If you are on a 250 and they have a bigger bike try pulling up a few lanes away and definitely not within their view. When the light changes always let them get far ahead of you as to not cause a situation. I usually turn off and take another road. Bikers are very brand, size oriented. If you aren't like them, they hate you. It is very dangerous to invade other biker's space. Be careful and avoid situations and you'll be fine.

I have to agree, this is the best all around rule of thumb.

if a bike is stopped at a light and im coming up to them, i try to make sure and do a stoppie as i approach. before the light turns green, i make sure and do a burnout next to them to show them how cool i am. after the light turns green i make sure to wheelie passed them through a corner. dont forget to give them the finger!

Personally, I have ear plugs in and don't feel like yelling over all the noise at an intersection. I'm not going to be distracted by someone else who wants to BS at a busy light when there is traffic to watch. @csmith12 has the best approach.

Stop light, pull up and say hi or give a head nod, I always talk to them myself, doesn't matter what type of bike there riding, I usually ask mopeds what mileage they get. Best way to start a conversation with any motorcyclist is say "Nice bike". If its a Harley rider with a real patch, don't bother trying to talk as they probably won't even look at you and don't rev your engine as to race or you may meet his fist.

Catching up to other rides, yes stagger with them or line up with them but don't trust them if there in a single line on a straight road, most likely lack of experience riding as a group. Never trust an unknown group of bikes as there may be a new rider or two in the pack that is riding scared ****less.

Most bikers like talking to other bikers, doesn't matter on bike size or make.

Rules of thumb I go by:

-Pull up behind, giving distance as if it were a car, unless invited.
-Always assume CCowboy posts done with sarcasm.

When riding the Vulcan, stay away from sport riders.

When riding the Ninja stay away from any other bikers.

It's funny, but can I please turn this off? It makes it very difficult to use Find In Page to follow my own quote trees without opening a million tabs using the pointer arrows and I am often searching in page for my username for other reasons. It has yet to "get" me or confuse me directly as intended, but it's still impacting usability!

Why don't you just search for CPT Falcon or J.Emmett?

It works sometimes, but it doesn't show up in every view, like this reply window I'm in now that shows the posts in reverse chronological order. Also, when someone genuinely uses my handle or quotes me, I would skip right over it.
