In Florida, it's usually the result of underground limestone being slowly dissolved by underground streams. Much of Florida is riddled with caves that were created by water flow through underground limestone. When the top of the limestone layer is close to the surface and it gets so thin that it can't support what's above, it collapses into the opening below and a sinkhole is born.

In Louisiana, there have been several salt domes that collapsed, usually as a result of drilling rigs punching through them and allowing water in. Water dissolves the salt, and no more dome - just a sinkhole.

Oh so it dissolves underneath the surface and then the road, for example, just falls, creating a hole..? That is some crazy stuff right therr..

What do you think will happen when they finish pumping the "oceans" of oul out from under the middle east? The entire section of the planet will simply drop out of sight one day.
