Something about college and chicken strips..
Two SV650s and one Honda(?), but for some reason, college riders like having chicken strips! *If you go to Mississippi State, and this is your bike, I apologize..*

I've always noticed the same thing at my local universities, I've only ever seen 2 bikes with the tires used to the edge, one was a streetfightered ninja 650, looked like it was set up for stunting as well. The other was a zx6r, where the owner does track days on it (he said A group but I wouldn't be surprised if he were really I group, ego twists the words) as well as fast paced twisty rides and lives on campus so he never commutes with it. pretty much everyone else in that position commutes which creates chicken strips because there's never anywhere where you could properly lean the bike over in the first place

college kids are broke. they use bikes as cheap transport. not so much as their weekend toy.

It's not that chicken strips are bad, especially for college riders.. It's just interesting seeing guys committing to sport bikes without using them as sport bikes. A lot of standards and cruisers are better college commuters.
And a side note: There's an amazing stretch of road with lots of twisties and curves, all off the major road of campus. The riders just aren't using it!

Well, new gen is a different story. Otherwise, there is tons of aftermarket support for them, and dat V8. I'm not denying it's a fundamentally bad car, but it wasn't ever meant to do those things you stated, so yeah.

it weights 4000 lbs. it has macpherson front suspension. non adjustable at 4 corners. it is a two ply 18ga mild steel spot welded unit body that hasn't advanced in 30 years except in ways to crush more. it has gotten weaker over the years for safety reasons. no thank you. i would take a smart car before i took a 'stang.

That's you though, but it's just the American ideology of if it ain't broke...
Plus, are you forgetting the Mustang starts at 23k? Name other new cars that have adjustable suspension at that price point. You named stuff that's reserved for higher end vehicles. The Mustang isn't trying to act like something it isn't lol.

IRS doesn't change the fact that its 4000lbs with barred macphersons in front. it will never handle well with macpherson fronts. in my book, if its not multilink or double uneven wishbone fronts, its not worth my time. even a honda civic from 1993 has better suspension technology than the BRAND NEW mustang. what does that tell you about fords technology investments? the mustang is designed to look and crash well. because its designed for a 16 year old in highschool.

That aside, the new Mustang is on par with the early 70s imports! There's a reason true car guys bought Datsun 240z's instead of the equivalent Mustangs and Camaros. 240z had MacPhersons up front and Chapmans in the back, and that was over 40 YEARS AGO!

I'd think the camaro would be the one I'd be more likely to buy (two uncles work for gm so discounts) but I don't feel that I am the target market for these cars regardless. I want a car to be a fun commuter that is as usable as possible, so a more european hot hatch market appeals to me. golf gtd to the us plz. I also don't like the lack of visibility in the camaro, makes changing lanes a pita

But for $75,000, you could buy a Hellcat Challenger or Charger, plus room for a decent condition 60's Z/28 project. OR a used 911 Turbo. OR a new Corvette. Decisions, decisions..

if I'm dropping 75g on a car, it's gonna be a german luxury model
there's a limit I could spend on a performance car/bike because if I spend too much on it I'd never be able to properly drive it for added financial strain to fear of wrecking

Out here, the reason bikes have massive chicken strips is because the roads are all straight. Literally no turns for miles. There's only a few bikes on campus because again, no turns for miles.
More beat up farm trucks and lifted urban assault trucks and wannabe Cowboys than motorcycles. Anyone who rides doesn't understand how to turn. They just see a bike as a fast 0-60 time and have no idea what it means to ride track. They all say, "so you race?" No moron, it's a track day, not a race. |

this is tempting, but I typically follow with one hand cringing at how crossed up he is...then he goes to point out that he has smaller chicken strips than I do, because that's what he really thinks is the important deciding factor in speed. as I said, he needs a track day

Then cheat a bit. Let 5psi out of your tires next time. Voila, no chicken strips and lots of sideway grip.

Not just college kids. I'd say at least 80% (probably more) of sport bikes have chicken strips. Just saying! I'd guess the majority of sport bike riders never see a track.
It's just like cars. Most sports cars never go to tracks especially high end sports cars. People just like the looks and the the performance. Even if they never use that performance. What I don't understand is why sport bike folks are so judgmental about chicken strips. Makes no sense to me. Not everyone lives where there are twisties. And if the majority of your riding is in a straightline (commuting), there is no avoiding chicken strips. And if you aren't a track rider but are wearing out the edge of your tires on public roads, you need to either slow down and get to the track OR learn proper body positioning. |

the SVs usually run a narrower rear tire, 160 instead of 180. dunno how that contributes though...?? |
