Strange tach and throttle issue

Hi guys, I had a strange issue during my commute today. I've been riding regularly 3-4 times a week for the past couple months and never had an issue until now.

I was sitting at a red light with the clutch in when I noticed that the needle was all the way past the '15' mark just resting there. It was weird. The engine was idling. When the light turned green, the bike was unresponsive to throttle. I seemed to notice that the needle was then seen bouncing back and fourth until my bike died, as if I had stalled it. It tried to restart it a couple times and it finally came back. I put the choke back on for a bit and then I rode it without issues.

I verified that I had gas in the bike. I haven't washed the bike recently.

Is there any cause for this? I don't want this to happen as the bike kinda suddenly died at a red light.

Check your battery terminals for cleanliness and ensure they are tight.

I would say look at the battery also. Do check the terminals, but i would also check voltage.

Check it before you start it (should be 12.7V or more), then check it while you are cranking (should be 10V or more), then check it when it's running about 3000 RPMs (should be over 13V).

A bad battery, or loose connections, will do what you described.

Thanks. I'll go check the battery voltages. Should I wait for the engine to warm up before revving it up to 3k rpm?

Give it a minute or so of run time, but no need for it to be up to operating temp to rev to 3000.

this happened to my grandfather's bike when a wire in the ignition switch got exposed and hits a chassis ground , the gauge is still alive but erratic , and the bike will stall when on low rpm

Don't forget to check the grounds as well.
