20/mo for almost full coverage. I'm going to be dropping to liability soon if the 250 doesn't leave my ownership.

I was quoted for $270/year for a new ZX10 full coverage.

Wow.... My 1000RR is $48 a month. I guess rates can vary widely per state, area, driving record, etc....

That is what I said. I was totally shocked at it. LOL

I double checked to make sure I didn't accidentally select the Z1000, and I didn't. People kept telling me that I'd be very surprised at how MUCH I'd be paying for full coverage on a SS, but I got that quote and my jaw hit the floor at how little ($22/mo) it was going to cost.

I'm a 21-year-old male with 2 speeding tickets on my record, and I'm paying $48/month to Progressive (through USAA.) I guess that's not bad.

sherjay - you're in California, check out Mike Felder Insurance. All they do is motorcycles and they represent a number of different companies, so they can figure out what's the best deal for your situation.

I've been using this insurance agent for years and the few times that my rate has changed they contacted us and suggested getting new quotes. It happened again this year and we ended up changing from Progressive company "A" to Progressive company "B" to avoid a $200 rate hike on the policy for our four bikes. I don't remember the exact names of "A" and "B", something like "... National" and "... West". The weird thing? Progressive company "A" and Progressive company "B" use the same P.O. Box!! (No! It's not a big shell game! )

Anyway, I have spoken with Mike Felder a few times over the years. He's a cool guy that rides on a regular basis. I've never met him or staff personally since they're 400 miles from me, but I've always gotten prompt service from them.

I also have Progressive through USAA, but I wonder if there really is a "through USAA" discount, because as far as I can tell, they just transfered/fwd my call to progressive. When new in 98, I was paying $8X/mo. for full coverage (forget amounts), $500 deductible. Perfect record, but in CA. Year two I was rewarded with a $30/mo. reduction, and year 3 I was recently notified of an another $20/mo reduction for keeping my nose clean and alive. That is a $50/mo. reduction after two full years of riding!!!

Unfortunately, 2 weeks ago I was also awarded with a speeding ticket (first in a decade), but hopefully traffic school will keep that hidden from insurance. He actually said he clocked (paced me) faster than I believe I was going..... so much for trusting in that MC speedo variance.

Sorry to 7500 the OT, but I want to encourage everyone to be ESPECIALLY careful right now about tickets, because there is a significant increase of ticketing going on right now with all the budgets getting slashed. Literally almost everyone I know who never gets tickets are getting them now, and I see those cops EVERYWHERE, and CONSTANTLY now!

$19.33/month minimum liability coverage only. Seem to remember that full coverage with a $100k medical rider was going to run around $150/month. State Farm.

Insurance

My insurance through Rider has just expired.. I believe its a northeast company... anyway I was paying $87 for the year but that was basic. If I add theft and fire it goes up to 247 for the year. Is it worth it? I tend to not leave my bike places since i use it more to ride not for transportation. Also if my bike gets stolen how much would I actually get for this? im asking because Rider customer service pretty much blows and never get back to me.

Angry Insurance renewal ripoff

Coming up on my 1 yr riding anniversary, got my renewal notice from P________. Just for giggles, I decided to do an online quote with them.

Turns out I saved 50% by buying a new policy on the web in lieu of renewing my existing policy. I'm not ragging P________; they seem to be a good company, but it infuriates me when loyal customers are thrown under the bus!

So I call to cancel the existing policy ($7 refund, but hey....) and they asked why on earth I would do such a thing as cancel them. So I gave her my new policy #, and she confirmed that they could NOT have matched that rate unless I quit and came back.

On another note, does anyone have experience with their Roadside Assistance? I added that to my policy for ~$12/yr (AAA moto add-on was $35). Since I have been venturing out more and further, I wanted some peace of mind, since I imagine a bike tow isn't cheap.

thats strange, so its an introductory offer. i'd get pissed and tell them to go screw themselves. if they can offer that rate to new clients, they can offer it to their loyal clients.

yeah i went with rider insurance .. its only offered in a couple states but full coverage for my bike runs about $600 for a full year and refund when I put it on just storage for winter.

Geico wanted a redic amount and Progressive was not cheap at all. When I switched my bike and did a qoute it was like $87 a month compaired to the $58 a month for the 250.

Progressive is kinda of weird....for my car, which renews every 6 months, I get two different rates. It renews in July and February, and for the July renewal it's always about 100 more then the February renewal. But Progressive is BY FAR the cheapest by almost half from the other companies I have been quoted for and I have a clean record.
I had allstate under my parents for 7 years, and when I went to get my own policy, they wouldn't even come close to progressives rates.

I'm hoping my renewal in February will be much cheaper next year since I turn 25 in January and your rates are supposed to drop at 25. But I think mine are pretty reasonable as is, so we'll see.

As far as bike insurance....I live in Florida and I have medical insurance. I looked but didn't find and insurance rates for the bike that I found reasonable. The cheapest was around 50 a month for really low coverage and I only ride about 50 miles a month...so I opted out of insurance. So far so good...and I've saved almost 2000 so far since I got the bike by not paying insurance...that could almost buy me another 08 if something happened to mine. (2000 is about all an insurance company is gonna pay out on a totaled 08 anyways since they don;t go by street value).

You can find things like this with almost any insurance company. I use a broker and have him look up different companies every time I renew (car and motorcycle). My only direction to him is that I will NOT go with Progressive, even if they are the cheapest.

What did you expect from a company called Progressive...

Progressive is named progressive because they support the progressive causes, they will never get a dime of my money...EVER.

Yeah, I wondered what the "total'ed" value on a '09 would be.

I've never been much for comprehensive/collision, but given my current finances, I would be hard pressed to buy a new helmet, much less a whole bike.

I don't even want to tell ya what I pay, but the new policy is running me $13/ month, with a $250 deductible. The advantages of being old and cautious I guess.

What about liability? If you have no insurance at all, you better hope and pray that you don't get into an accident with damages where you are at fault. $2,000 is nothing.

I know the risks. I would prefer insurance, but the price just doesn't justify it for how little I ride. It's a gamble, I know, but I'm not breaking any laws. I actually have my bike listed for sale at the moment (at a high price) because I ride so little right now...if it sells I did well, if not, then I have a toy. As much as I'd miss it, I know someone else would ride more, and that's what the bike was made for.

Big risks IMO. Doesn't take much to cause thousands of dollars in damage to a vehicles. You'd be surprised the damage your little bike bouncing off of a fender can cause. And then of course there is injury. Some years back, a taxi went through a stop sign and hit me (I was driving my car). Clearly his fault, right? Well two years later he sues me for medical bills. Claims I "waved him on" which is BS; why would I wave someone on and then not stop? Anyway, long story short, the judge told my lawyer that the case was worth $30k to cover the guys bills. We settled for $20k. Insurance paid. Just goes to show you that you don't have to be wrong to be liable.

Insurance rates for your Ninja 250

Alex if this has been done before then please delete. I did a quick search and did not see a similar post. I would be curious to know what people are paying.

Maybe we could format our answers in this way?

State you live in;
Sex;
Bike year;
Riders age;
Coverage- full or comp
Deductable
Points;
Years riding.
Price.
Company

This way we can all shop around thru the forum to see who has the best rates and coverage?

I will start;
Georgia
male
2002 Ninja 250
I am 41 years old
Full Coverage
1000 dollar deductable- sux!
0 points
over 26 years experience on motorcycles on street
I pay around $200 a year
American Modern

25 YO male, 01' 250 ninja married living in Missouri. I have Progressive and pay $96 one time per year for liability. I also have 2 cars with them. According to the ins. company my bike aint worth crap and it wouldnt be worth having full coverage imo. I also work for the state DOC and have excellent health and accident insurance, so that isnt a concern of mine.

I am 38 year old single male with a clean driving record in the past 3 years. Insurance for the 250 is rediculous. I called 3 agents, 2 with Dairyland and 1 with Progressive. My current policy with the 650R is with Progressive. All 3 came out to pretty much the same-about $300 a year(same as 650R) for liab, uninsured motorists, and comprehensive-no collision. With collision, it would be almost $600-and that's with both bikes on the policy-multi bike discount. I never get coll. with a new bike-it's the most expensive. I may drop the 650 down to liab next year 'cause it's an older bike now('07).

If the 25 year old opted for the $300,000 with $250 deductible, it might cost him/her $500 or more per year! YMMV
+1. One of the few who understands the futility of most of these posts re: insurance. Talking about what you pay is worthless w/o details of liability, etc.
These posts with no details make as much sense as the following:
" How much should I pay for a motorcycle?"
" I got mine for $4,000"
" Damn. I just paid $7,000 for mine."
" I just got one for $1,000"
" Wow.Great deal!"
Also, call a number of companies to get premium quotes. When I first insured my Ninja, using the same information and same policy limits I got quotes ranging from $350/yr to over $2,000/yr! I'm not getting into the details of my policies since the point is, different companies will have very different rates for your individual situation.

Insurance cost

Everybody keeps saying that Motorcycle insurance is cheap, but here is what Geico just quoted me.... Almost as much as the bike itself and about three times what the car policy costs.

Insurance isn't required in this state, but I was thinking about getting a minimal liability policy. Should I just forget about it? Anybody else live in Florida and have a decent rate?

Your deductible is crazy low so your policy cost is going to be crazy high. You really should be looking at $250-500 deductible.

Also how much would it be for you to replace your bike? A general rule for cars is that if your annual fee for collision coverage is 10% or more of your vehicle's value and if your vehicle is paid off you should consider dropping collision coverage.

I'm paying about $30 a month for much better coverage with a $500 deductible.
