Oil disposal...?

how do you dispose of your oil? I'm gonna be changing my bike's oil for the first time (tired of getting raped by them mechanics over here), but I'm not sure how or where to throw away the oil... The only recycle place i found is like 80 miles round trip... not worth it.

so how do you get rid of yours? do you put it in a gallon and put it in the trash or what?

take it to a place that sells oil or changes oil. They will recycle it for you.

Store it in a container, like a milk jug and make one trip to the recycle place when you accumulate too much.

FWIW, most auto centers will take it for free. You sure the only place that will around you is 80 miles?

When I can't reuse it, autozone.

I put my bikes used oil in my lawn tractor, chain saw bar oil, keep some to soak chains (pedal bike, chain saw, dirt bikes ect.. ect..), same soak bucket is used for other parts that need soaked, kills ants, wasps and other pests, clean tools to prevent rust. So many other uses... google is your friend here.

I rarely have to take oil in to be properly disposed of.

Oh! I also spray it on my fence where it meets the ground, it helps the wood resist groundwater. The local farmers will take as much of it as I can give them for their miles of fencing.

Just drop it off at any place that changes oil. Jiffy Lube, etc.

Buy an oil drum, they are cheap, and place all your used oil in it. Then find someone who heats their home with an oil heater and sell it to them or give it to them.

I would try the following:

• Calling up an auto parts store that sells oil to see if they take used oil
• Check out http://earth911.com/recycling/used-m...l-and-filters/
• Check out your town's/city's department of waste/public works website. They may it at a transfer station or during "hazardous waste days".

Find out if your garbage pickup company will take it. I just put mine out by the curb in a clear plastic bottle next to my recycling bin and the recycling truck takes it away.

Not all cities do that though.

Lol... thank you guys for the new ideas.... I wouldn't ask you guys for answers if I were thinking about throwing it in the sink, or in water somewhere... I just wanted to make sure I got it recycled instead of dumping it where it's causing more harm than good...

I'll make some calls to local auto parts out here today..

What's the big deal? He's in Tampa, on the Gulf coast. Deepwater Horizon spilled 4.9 million barrels into that body of water. What's another couple of quarts?



Seriously, here's the Florida DEP site about used oil. I searched for used oil handlers in Tampa (link is about 2/3 down in the text) and got almost 50 hits. You're not looking hard enough. You can also search by zip.

Can it literally be used for an oil heater without modifications?

EDIT: Just did a bit of reading, oil has to first be filtered and typically put in small amounts. Modern day oil has additives that increases its flash point thus increasing the temperature needed to burn it.

I was nervous at first but there was no way I'd let a mechanic do the oil change in under fifteen minutes. I let the bike sit vertically for forty five minutes to make sure I get as much of the old oil out. Try and find a shop that'll do that without charging extra.

Turns out the hardest thing was finding a shallow enough container that'll hold the oil (didn't want to buy an oil pan). Since I worked for a nursing home, I grabbed a bedpan which worked out perfectly. I still use it to this day. Can't believe people throw these out on a daily basis.

For car, I use my normal drain pan. For the bike, I use a plastic dish, its one of those ones used for giving out halloween candy, that is perfect sized to hold all the oil and long enough you can do the oil change with the bike on its kickstand without any hassle.

We have 5 auto parts stores here that accepts oil for recycle. I kinda go against the PO-PO and carry 5 5-gallon containers filled with oil and stop at each one with a container. Saves some trips from our house to the parts house. Cause it's about 26-miles...
