What should I do?

My 250 is totaled, I'm sad. I'm going to get 4k plus tax back from insurance to do whatever I want with. I have 2 different options I can go with. Option 1, buy another 250 and mod it like I was planning to do with my 250 in order to be an awesome twistie and/or stunt bike. Option 2, save the money and save up for my dream bike, a new Ninja 1000.

Qualm about Option 1, I don't really want someone else's bike, I want my bike. I would only buy someone else's 250 if it was in perfect condition and stock (I don't want your ****** slip on exhaust or your ****** fender eliminator or any other ****** mods you have done) I could also buy a new 2011 250, I've seen a few, I just want an all black one, don't want that crappy 2012 color.

Qualm about Option 2, I would have a 650 and a 1000, 2 bikes I deem excellent for commuting. I could make the 650 my twistie bike and have the 1000 be my commuter, but something feels a little off about that. I also love my 250, I never wanted to get rid of it and I've had a dream about owning the 250 650 and 1000, the costco family pack of Kawi Sport Motorcycles.

So what do I do? Get another 250 whether new or used and continue as if nothing happened even though there is a gaping hole in my heart where my first 250 used to be? Or do I get my dream bike earlier than expected and possibly lay off a few of the more technical aspects of riding?

Hard choice. I'd say save up for the 1k right now, since it sounds like a used 250 wouldn't really make you quite as happy as youd like. Personally I wouldn't want a 650 and a 1000 since they're so similar, one just has double the power of the other lol, but again thats just me. Do you get to keep your totalled ninjette? If so you could save up and slowly rebuild it to become a better, stronger, faster bike than it could ever be before, WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY.

I voted 1000 because it's your dream bike. From what I heard in reviews, it's pretty comfortable for the long rides.

I can't vote because my choice isnt there.

I put option two, but I would get rid of the 650. I don't see the point in having the 1000 with it. If you must have two bikes, swap the 650 for 250 and keep it for cheap build track, etc.

I think if you just got that Ninja 1000 (or the Z1000) you wouldnt even miss the 250 or 650. Im biased tho as I never really liked the 650... its kinda a "not quite there" bike. Plus, Im addicted to I4's !!!

You already know the true answer for this.... Your skillz ready for a 1000? Why should your answer be any different than the one we give others? Just because you might be able to get it with the insurance claim, ect... don't make it the right bike at the right time.

But... I always say, your $$, your bike. Only you choose how to spend it.

I would have two 250 ninjas. One totally tricked out suspension wise . Set up to race the twisted road. And one that I could do an iron butt on. That way I only have to buy parts and work on one type of bike.

@Jiggles honestly, I like everyones idea of selling the 650 and having a 250 and a 1000. That would honestly be the best of both worlds. You have your twisties and stunt bike that you could take to the track and have fun with, and your commuting bike.

OR You could buy the 1000, sell the 650, and buy a new 250 for daily riding, and buy a more used 250 and turn it into a strictly track bike. now that would be badass.

But if it was me, I would be happy with the 650 and 250 because litre bikes scare the crap out of me (my dad had the zx12 and zx14) and personally I'm in love with zx6r's, 650's,cbr600s,r6's and gsxr600's.

I'd put a bit more time in before getting the thou, you've answered that one yourself, the zx-10 is a mental machine to step up to & not what I'd call commute friendly either

Edit: Ninja 1000 over here means the ZX-10R Superbike, that pic looks like a Z1000 with a fairing, not as mental a bike but still a big step up from a short stay on a 250 & a month or so on a 650

I wouldn't be buying a 1000 for the 1000cc's of power, I would be buying it for the comfort. I completely agree that a 1000 has way more power than I will ever need. The thing is, the Ninja 1000 is just like the perfect bike for me. It's the most comfortable bike I've ever sat on. It's like finding a pair of gloves that fit better than any other glove you've ever tried on. I think of the 1000 as more of a sport touring bike, and that would be how I want to use it.

And besides, it has a mode selector which I would probably always have on

Yea, the Ninja 1000 is not the supersport, it doesn't have all the advancements that supersports do and it has a much nicer price point, close to what a zx-6r costs. It also has ABS available, something I'd really like to have on a bike.

As far as the 650 goes, I love the 650, I don't ever want to sell it. Maybe that would change when I got the 1000 but my real dream is to own all 3. Now, here is the funny thing, I'm going to ride more aggressively on the 250 than on any of the other bikes. Practicing leaning and lines in the twisties, just doing more technical things. When I get on the 650, I feel more like just cruising, I'll take it into the twisties, but I'm not going to push myself as hard as I do on the 250. That could also change though, I could make the 650 the twistie bike and the 1000 be my cruiser.

If I get the 1000, I will likely end up buying another 250 eventually

I'm the kind of guy that's going to end up having a garage filled with bikes, each with a different purpose.

ninja 1000. Keep it stock. Sell POS 650. Get new 250 once they do a remodel/remake/update and make it a sick-a$$ aggressive track bike. (for road use of course )

Have you contemplated not having a ninja?! There are lots of other bikes out there you know! My next bike might be a yamaha yz250f. The Triumph Thruxton SE also pulls me in:

So many yum bikes out there begging for me!

Are you paying cash or financing a 1000? If cash, I'd sell the 650 and have the 1000 until you finish school and pay off the loans you said you have, then buy whatever the hell I wanted.

Financing it, unless you get someone to cosign and get a <3% rate, isn't really worth it while your in debt with other bills (Stafford loans are like 6.8%). I'm still confused why you need 2 bikes while in college and living at home???

If I could have any 2, it would be a black or blue 250 (since you don't want the best color - 2012 Candy Apple Lime ) and the green 1000. It looks soooo sexy.
